USA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TEAM 2022 RESULTS
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA • SEPTEMBER 22-OCTOBER 1, 2022
The USA carried an unblemished 8-0 record en route to the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup gold medal, qualifying for the 2024 Olympics. The Americans set several milestones, notably winning their fourth straight Women’s World Cup gold medal by a record 22-points over Chi- na. Overall, the USA has earned 11 gold medals over the 19 editions of the event. The U.S. opened group play with an 87-72 victory over Belgium racing to a 12-0 lead. Breanna Stewart scored a game-high 22 points. Against Puerto Rico, the U.S. had six players score in double figures led by Shakira Austin’s 19 points. The 106-42 final score would be the first of three games where the Americans scored over 100 points. In a preview of the gold medal game, the USA handled China 77-63. It was the first game for the trio of Las Vegas Aces, who joined the team after capturing the WNBA title a few days earlier. A’ja Wilson (20), Chelsea Gray (12) and Kelsey Plum (8) accounted for 40 points. The USA set their record for the largest margin (76) of victory against South Korea in a 145-69 victory (previous was 75 points, 119-44, vs. Angola on 9/30/14). Plum’s 20 points led the USA over Bosnia & Herzegovina 121-59. In the quarterfinals against Serbia, the U.S. has a standout performance from Alyssa Thomas. The forward’s 13 points and 14 rebound dou- ble-double kickstarted a USA 20-0 run in the second quarter, which provide enough separation for the 88-55 victory. A wire-to-wire 83-43 victory over Canada in the semifinals set the stage for a rematch against China. The USA held Canada scoreless for the first six minutes of the contest and became the first team in World Cup history to hold an opponent under 50 points in a semifinal game. The gold medal game was the American’s 30th straight victory in a Women’s World Cup event. The U.S. would lead 43-33 at halftime and maintain the double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Gray had 10 points, eight assists and three steals. Wilson was named the Women’s World Cup MVP. Additionally, Wilson and Stewart were named to the competition’s All-Star Five along with Han Xu (China), Steph Talbot (Australia) and Bridget Carleton (Canada).

USA BASKETBALL HISTORY
USA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TEAM 2018 RESULTS
The USA compiled a 6-0 record en route to the FIBA World Cup gold medal and a qualifying berth into the 2020 Olympics. The gold medal marked the USA’s 10th in the 18 editions of the event and the first time the USA had won three in a row. In directing the team, Dawn Staley became the USA’s first person to be a member of gold medal winning World Cup team as an athlete, assistant coach and head coach. Sue Bird logged her fifth World Cup appearance, and as the winningest FIBA World Cup player ever, became the first athlete to win four World Cup gold medals. Bird also became the all-time USA World Cup assists leader, surpassing Staley to finish with 107 since 2002. Opening against Senegal, Elena Delle Donne (19 points) and Nneka Ogwumike, who went 6-of-6 from the field to tie a 20-year-old USA World Cup record en route to 16 points, led the USA to a 87-67 victory. Breanna Stewart scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the third quarter to help the USA to a 100-88 victory over China. Tina Charles scored 18 points and Diana Taurasi added 16 as the USA defeated Latvia 102-76. Brittney Griner, who missed the first two games with an ankle injury, made her 2018 debut with 15 points (6-8 FG). The U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals against Nigeria, which became the first African team to ever make it into the quarterfinals in the World Cup’s 65-year history. However, the team would go no further as the USA outscored Nigeria 44-17 in the second half to earn a 71-40 victory. Stewart scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting to help lead the Americans. A quick start in the second half of the semifinal, fueled by a record-setting night at the foul line (19-19 FT), gave the USA the edge it needed to defeat Belgium 93-77. Taurasi led with 26 points, while Stewart tallied 20. Additionally, when Griner started the scoring off with a layup soon after the tip, she put the USA over 10,000 all-time World Cup points. Meeting Australia in the gold medal game, Stewart and Taurasi ignited a 10-0 opening run and rolled on for the eventual 73-56 victory. Griner and the USA’s defense keyed the win by holding Australia’s Liz Cambage, who averaged 27.2 points in her first five contests, to just seven points. Bird entered the gold medal game one assist shy of tying Staley’s all-time USA World Cup record. She assisted Stewart’s opening 3, and 20 seconds later, passed to Taurasi for the record. Stewart averaged 16.3 points and 6.3 rebounds and was named tournament MVP. Taurasi joined her on the all-tournament team. SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA, TENERIFE, SPAIN • SEPTEMBER 22-30, 2018
