USA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP TEAM 1998 RESULTS

KARLSRUHE, BREMEN & BERLIN, GERMANY • MAY 26-JUNE 7, 1998

Posting a 9-0 record, the 1998 squad captured the World title after coming from behind in its semifinal and gold medal matchups. Defeating its preliminary first round opponents Japan 95-89, Lithuania 87-61 and Senegal 77-48, the U.S. advanced to the preliminary second round at the top of its pool. The U.S. cruised through its second round games, surpassing China 70-54, Spain 79-68 and closed out the round with a 36-point, 96-60, rout of previously unbeaten Russia to advance to the quarterfinals at the top of its group. Matched against the Slovak Republic in the quarterfinals, the USA received strong efforts from its bench as Chamique Holdsclaw and DeLisha Milton recorded 20 and 11 points each to lead the U.S. to the 89-62 victory. In the semifinal game, after trailing by as many as 10 in the first half, the USA rallied in the second half to earn a 93-79 victory over rival Brazil. Ruthie Bolton-Holifield scored 16 points and hit a key 3-pointer with 17:25 to play in the second half that gave the U.S. the lead 51-49 and the USA rolled in for the victory. Williams and Leslie also finished with 16 points, and added 13 and 14 rebounds, respectively. In the gold medal contest against Russia, unlike the first meeting in which the U.S. dominated almost from the start, the U.S. trailed for most of the game and at halftime lagged behind 37-28. Fighting back in the second half, the game’s deciding moment came with 1:46 remaining. With the U.S. trailing 61-60, Bolton-Holifield nailed a 3 to put the USA up 63-61. Russia tied the game, but Bolton-Holifield answered with her second straight 3 to give the U.S. a 66-63 lead at 1:12. Russia scored to make it a one-point game with 52 seconds left, then Leslie increased the U.S. lead back to three, 68-65, when she hit a turnaround jumper with 34 seconds showing. Russia turned the ball over on its following possession, and Katie Smith recovered it and eventually Dawn Staley was fouled with 10 seconds left. She made both free throws to up the U.S. lead to 70-65, and after Russia missed a 3-pointer, Staley made one of two free throws with 3 seconds left to seal the 71-65 victory. Leslie finished as the USA’s top scorer with 20 points and a game best 12 rebounds. Milton added 13 points, while Bolton-Holifield and Smith each had 11 points. Staley recorded seven points and tied the USA World Championship single game record for assists with 12.
