A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER
the remaining Year 7 forms will get their turn! On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome Alison Kervin OBE, the first woman to referee a rugby match at Twickenham, Sarah Brindley, Captain of Thamesian RFC, and Kate Howe from RuptureXIBIT in Hampton Wick to talk to Year 10. This inspirational afternoon explored “Building resilience through art and sport” and was hosted by professional rugby player, Victoria Rush, to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. We will all be cheering on the Red Roses tomorrow! Our Year 13 English Literature students enjoyed a trip to The Bush Theatre to watch the new play, ‘Not Your Superwoman’. The play explores the relationship between a mother and daughter and the themes intersect with the ‘Identity and Belonging’ focus for their coursework. Thank you to all the students and staff for helping the school photographs run smoothly on Wednesday and Thursday. Details on how to order your school photos will be sent home shortly. Over the summer our phone system underwent an overhaul and upgrade. Unfortunately some of the Waldegrave community have reported issues when phoning in to school. We have worked with our provider to ensure that this has been resolved and apologise profusely for any issues you experienced. If you are unsure if your message has been received by the school please contact us. We thank you for your understanding regarding this matter.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
On the BBC website this week, an article about brain fog had some excellent tips for helping our brains to function effectively that Ms Dhir shared with Year 11 parents during the Information Evening. It includes an acronym that is very much on brand for Waldegrave - SWANS. This stands for Sleep, Water, Activity, Nutrition, and Stress, and is an excellent reminder that we can help our students to learn effectively by encouraging them to get the basics right. Achieving for Children are running a number of new workshops and courses for parents of secondary school students. These include: Left to Their Own Devices, to help families deal with their children and teenagers using phones, tablets and gaming devices online; Talking Teens, a short course to help parents improve their understanding of adolescent development and communication; and Parents in Conflict, a short course for parents who are finding it hard to work together for the sake of their children.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7
It has been lovely to see Year 7 starting to attend the various clubs and practices on offer. This week we went on our first two Thames Young Mariners trips, 7FSM and 7SSN had wonderful weather on Tuesday and threw themselves with enthusiasm into every activity. They loved the dock jump and said they had “the best fun ever”! On Thursday our second trip took place with the turn of 7PCL & 7EVA, the weather wasn’t quite as bright but it didn’t curb their enthusiasm to have fun. This week Year 7 were introduced to the Book Champions Initiative led by Ms Lewis, our literacy lead. Awards and house points will be given to the student who has read the most books, the form which has read the most books and house points for the top readers - Let’s get reading Year 7! Well done to 7PRE who are top of the Epraise table. Keep working hard and supporting each other to earn even more over the course of the year. Don’t forget we have a fantastic photography competition running this term, it would be great to see lots of entries from Year 7. Please see page three of the bulletin for more information and details of how to enter. Next week we have our final two Thames Young Mariners trips with 7EHA & 7PRE going on Monday and 7SRI & 7FBO on Wednesday. We hope they have as much fun as the first 2 trips did. A reminder that on Tuesday we are holding the Year 7 Parents information evening in the school hall. Please arrive at 4.45pm when there is the opportunity to meet your child’s form tutor. Then there will be a presentation from Ms Tongue, Mr Goulbourne, Mr Greaves and myself. The evening will finish with refreshments in the sixth form area. The famous Year 7 Family Bingo Night will take place on Friday 3 October 6.30-9.30pm in the school hall. This provides a great chance for you and your children to have some fun, meet other Year 7 parents and enjoy some pizza. There will be a bar offering a range of refreshments. We have a limited number of tickets available so please visit ParentPay to book tickets and order your pizzas - book now to avoid disappointment! We look forward to seeing you there, have a lovely weekend.
MRS BASHFORD-HYNES, HEAD OF YEAR 7
BOOK OF THE MONTH
Being Miss Nobody by Tasmin Winter Miss Nobody is a book about a girl with selective mutism, who rarely speaks and even then only to her family and her very much trusted neighbour. Rosalind has to deal with being the ‘mute ant’ in her school and has lost all hope of having a social life when she is tasked with being the buddy of a new girl at school. Having to tour Ailisa is a big struggle but this is a turning point, as a great friendship blossoms leading Rosalind to challenge herself further and further with her speech. Little did she know on meeting Ailisa that she would encourage her to speak in an assembly in front of the whole school and reveal in this assembly that she was the author of the ‘blog’ about the rude students in school that accidentally went viral… I really enjoyed this book because it reminds me of how we all struggle with school life but eventually we manage to find the answer to the solution. Read this book if you liked the Lottie Brooke’s Diary series!
