Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park Recreation Center Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park Recreation Center has been buzzing with activity! This past week, 13 creative participants crafted and took home custom Resin Sea Turtles. The gymnasium was full of energy, hosting 108 pickleball players and clinic students, 20 indoor soccer players, and 8 basketball enthusiasts. Our self-guided programs continue to thrive, with 100 patrons utilizing the fitness room, 9 enjoying walking fitness, and 6 joining in for Mahjong. Excitement is also building for the 2025 Senior Games—137 participants are already signed up and ready to compete!

Recreation

Tringali Park Recreation Center

JM Berlin Rotary Skate Park Last week at the J.M.B Rotary Skatepark we had a 22 skateboarders and 15 BMXers visit the park. The main building just got reopened and we are very excited for continuing operations in our new place!

The Recreation Center had another lively week of activities and events. Stride & Stretch led the way with 33 participants, offering a balanced mix of movement and stretching to support flexibility and mobility. Intro to Pickleball for Adults was held at full capacity with 16 participants, giving newcomers a chance to learn the game in a fun and welcoming environment. Ballet brought in 6 participants, offering a graceful way to stay active and engaged.

South County Regional Park Recreation Center

South County Regional Park Pool welcomed 458 swimmers this week. Water Aerobics had a strong week with 86 participants. South Country Regional Park Recreation Center continued to bring in large numbers for Pickleball with 157 players participating! It is always a joy to see the remote-control planes take to the skies in the gym and this week 5 gentlemen showed off their flying skills! Basketball welcomed 79 players for drop-in games. Pilates saw 8 attending Thursday class while11 Patrons took advantage of the fitness center workout machines.

Recreation

Harold Avenue Regional Park Recreation Center Harold Avenue Regional Park had 106 for Drop-in Pickleball, 132 for Basketball, 19 for Table Tennis and 4 for Volleyball. We’ve seen 12 enjoying the park for Walking Fitness. Silver Sneakers had 51 participants, Zumba had 15 getting their dance on, Pilates had 6 in attendance and Bonsai had 4 participants. So far, we have 64 players signed up for the fall/winter Co-Ed Youth Basketball League. The deadline to sign up for $75.00 is October 10. Late registration is $85.00 until October 17.

Parks & Natural Resources

Land Management This week staff conducted multiple gopher tortoise burrow surveys. Surveys are conducted prior to project initiation. Gopher tortoises are designated as a species of special concern in the state of Florida and in the northern portion of their range they are a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Staff conducted additional surveys on adjacent conservation easements in the Shell Creek Preserve area. Staff conducted trail maintenance on 5000 linear feet of trail in west county and Sheel Creek Preserve. Staff has been compiling data for our annual Florida Community Trust grant reporting cycle. These reports ensure compliance with the agreements that secured millions of dollars for the acquisition of county parks. Staff mowed nearly 27 miles of trails in multiple parks this week.

Parks & Natural Resources

Coastal This week Coastal and Marine staff helped out Kate Rose, our Charlotte County Sea Grant agent, out with a sea grass and clam survey out in the intercoastal near Boca. Coastal staff has also started Bald Eagle monitoring for the nesting season, which technically starts October 1, but a lot of Eagle’s have been spotted back at their nests already. Some Eagle pairs have been spotted working on their nests for the season too.

Here's the Good News for this week! We had fun this past Friday in Kid's STEAM! We learned all about longitude and latitude, the history of maps and cartography, and what the Four-Color Theorem is. The Four- Color Theorem states that you only ever have to use a maximum of 4 colors to color a map. Check ours out! Punta Gorda Charlotte Library

Englewood Charlotte Public Library the Englewood Charlotte Library this week! Ms. Angie and Ms. Holly hosted the 2nd Annual Superhero party, and it was a hit! The kids had a blast, and it was so much fun to see all the costumes. Our STEAM engineers designed some new contraptions to float on by, and the Hooked on Books group found some new reads. In schoolyard news, our newest round of Preschool preppers is here and they are ready to learn! Last but certainly not least, the quilters are beginning to plan for their winter projects already! Libraries & History

Port Charlotte Public Library

We had a busy week at the library! Twenty people came and enjoyed Dr. Zoebelein’s lecture about Florida Cattle Ranching; Mini musicians made shaker eggs and tried out different instruments in Tiny Tots. Teen Craft Club made mini dragon eye busted canvases. Mikayla stepped in for Ashley this weekend to cover story time for about ten toddlers and their caregivers, and our Bad B Movie series began, with a showing of The Claw. We have a secret code to crack in our newest display upstairs, made by Rebecca. Both Preschool Prep classes are doing great, too!
