Medium Renovation — SG Design and Build Construction Ltd

Project overview In Duffield, Derbyshire this design and build rear extension comprises a vaulted kitchen, dining, and living area, complete with a snug and utility room to create a lasting family home. The scope included extending the master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and reconfiguring the existing layout for a large en-suite, incorporating sun tubes for natural light. A partial rewire, DB board upgrade, unvented cylinder installation due to low water pressure, and underfloor heating in extended areas were also part of the works. The standout feature is the large apex frame with full-height glazing, offering views of the expansive garden and the Derbyshire Hills. Project highlights ● The installation of the vaulted structure required close work with the structural engineer. The original trussed rafters of the bungalow were preserved while maintaining a seamless ceiling line at

Challenges that were overcome The SG Design and Build Construction Ltd team successfully navigated several significant challenges, not least the tight schedule due to the availability of the client’s secondary accommodation. Additional hurdles ● Existing wiring was in poor condition so it needed to be remedied, so that the underfloor heating, with complex zoning and connecting to existing circuits, could be installed. ● The vaulted roof was the most challenging aspect. Once in place, coordinating everything required ongoing project management and close collaboration with the on-site team.

the bulkhead, maximising light and views into the vault.

● Two sets of electric triple Velux windows were incorporated, with careful attention paid to the ridge line to avoid any flat spots. The challenge of working with a non-square existing structure required exacting design and implementation. ● The crane lift was meticulously planned six months in advance to ensure the 60-meter lift of the 700kg apex frame was possible, as even a slight weight increase would have made it unfeasible. ● Details such as cold bridging for tie beams were key to refining the final design.
