Outstanding Builder of the Year – Martin Sneddon of Martin & Son Builders ilders
M artin Sneddon, the leader of Kilwinning-based Martin & Son Builders in Scotland, has been named Outstanding Builder of the Year, a title that reflects his exceptional service, client care, and profound contributions to the industry. His positive impact extends far beyond the projects he completes, influencing his team, subcontractors, and the broader community in meaningful ways. Sneddon is invested in the industry and its future, participating each year in a local ‘World at Work’ week, during which he speaks to schoolchildren and leads hands-on tasks to showcase construction, inspiring boys and girls to consider a career in the trades. Not stopping there, Sneddon is an avid fundraiser. When a team electrician was diagnosed with cancer, he organised a clay pigeon shooting fundraiser, raising £5,550 for the Beatson cancer unit. Sneddon, who is deaf, also raised £11,000 for the Cochlear Implant Suite
at Crosshouse Hospital, helping to improve services for other families. His example as a deaf builder also challenges preconceived notions, showing that communication is about reading people and situations, not just hearing. He proves that with the right mindset and attitude, anything is possible, and his professionalism sets a powerful example for inclusion in the industry. Sneddon’s clients love him too. He manages expectations by advising clients on common pitfalls and suggests creative ways to repurpose materials to reduce waste. When problems arise, his approach is to present clients with solutions, always leading with transparency.
