Ashley Marks, Director at AR Marks Contracts Limited in Harrow Iain Kernahan aka “Kerny”, joiner at O’Mac Construction in Scotland 1 What can’t you do without in your toolbox? Iain Kernahan: My paddy knife. It’s a scraper I’ve cut down to a specific size, and it’s one of those things I use for everything: taking beads off windows, glazing, or nudging things over. I’ve gone through loads of them, constantly replacing them because I’m snookered without it. This one, though, has lasted a while. ause I’m without it. This one, ough, has lasted

building. She’s the ideas person, and I’m the “make it happen” guy. AM: I’d love to do more certified passive house builds. We specialise in building houses to passive house

standards, but most clients don’t get them certified. So I’d like to do a few more where people commit to getting them fully certified all the way through. 5 If you weren’t a builder/ in construction, what would you do?

3 What’s the strangest request you’ve ever received from a client? IK: To be honest, I can’t

often ask why I’m listening to Harry Potter. You can’t beat Stephen Fry. The song that gets everyone going is Prada by Casso x Raye. A personal favourite is 1995 by my band The Tumbling Souls. AM: We used to have a lot of radio wars, so we’ve all settled on listening to Greatest Hits Radio. We’ve got a mix of young and old on the team, so that keeps everyone happy. But we all love a bit of Hall & Oates when it comes on. S ge byC favo The T W r

IK: I used to work on a TV show, Katie Morag , I drove

speedboats, and even farmed mussels. The TV work was good; if I hadn’t had kids on the way at the time, I probably would have stuck with that. I just fell into construction because I can do it. It’s good work, though. AM : I’d be in the meat industry, following in my dad’s footsteps. I got dragged out of school on the last day of my exams and s fa w ha tim n ams and

think of anything. It’s usually pretty straightforward. AM: It wasn’t a strange .

Ashley Marks: When I’m off-site, it is my iPad. But when I’m on-site, it’s my Martinez hammer. We’ve always used heavy hammers, and this is a titanium one. It’s the Rolls- Royce of hammers. 2 What’s your go- to radio station or what’s a favourite on-site song that gets everyone singing? IK: Normally, it’s Radio 2. I also listen to audiobooks. People off-site, it is my iPad. But whe I’m on-site, it’s my M hammer We he

request so much as it was a special one. We put a client’s mother’s ashes into the footings of their new house. We had just finished pouring the last bit of the foundation, and we all stepped away so they could go to the corner of the house and sprinkle the ashes in. t elastbto t e and we all stepped so they could g corne hous sprink the as
