October 7, 1951 ABRAHAM , A PIONEER FOR GOD Gen. 12:1-9; 13:14-17

call is stated in verses 2 and 3. God de sired to found a new nation through which to work out His redemptive plan. Through this nation blessing was prom ised to all nations. Abraham’s Immediate Response Gen. 12:4-9 Abraham quickly responded to God’s challenge. He manifested that faith which entitled him to a place among the heroes of faith as listed in Hebrews 11. He was able to impress others with his venture for “ Lot went with him” (v. 4). He broke completely with the past for he not only took his family with him but also “all their substance” (v. 5). He was done with the past. Furthermore, when Abraham reached the Promised Land, he manifested his devotion to God by build ing an altar to the God who appeared to him again (v. 7). This is repeated as he moves on to Bethel (v. 8). We note also that in his travels here and there in Palestine he dwelt in a tent as a stran ger and a pilgrim in the land. Thus was his life wholly surrendered to God. The altar and the tent very beautifully sum up the true believer’s life today. The altar stands for devotion to God. The tent speaks of the pilgrim character of the believer’s life in this world. His real citizenship is in Heaven (Phil. 3:20 R.V.). Abraham’s Encouragement Gen. 13:14-17 Lot had lifted up his eyes (v. 10) and had chosen that which appealed to the physical eye. Now God says to Abraham, “ Lift up now thine eyes” (v. 14). He was given a prospect far more glorious and far-reaching than anything that Lot saw. He got a vision of eternal signifi cance (v. 15). Furthermore, he was in vited to begin the process of appropri ating what God had promised (v. 17).

Pointers on the Lesson This is the first of a series of lessons dealing with Old Testament characters and events. The series begins with Abra ham and continues through the entrance of the children of Israel into the Land of Canaan under Joshua. There will be a break in the Old Testament lessons at the end of the quarter but they will be continued again in 1952 and 1954. Today we look at Abraham. His importance in the plan of God may be seen in the fact that fourteen out of the fifty chapters of Genesis are devoted to him. Then again he is referred to repeatedly in the rest of the Scriptures. He is the only man of those whose lives are recorded in the Old Testament who is called the “ friend of God” (Isa. 41:8; 2 Chron. 20:7). God was making a new beginning in His dealings with men at the period of our lesson. Adam had failed with result ing judgment, Noah’s descendants had failed, and now another attempt was be ing made through the Hebrew nation. And, as God has been prone to do, He chose a man to carry out His plans. Abraham became the founder of the Jewish nation and the channel of divine blessing to the world. Abraham’s Divine Call Gen. 12:1-3 In verse 1 the character of Abraham’s call is set forth. It was a call to separa tion. God asked him to leave his present situation with all of its precious asso ciations and enter into a new situation which was all unknown to him. Com paring this verse with verse 4, and 11:31,32 and Acts 7:2-4, it is probably best to consider this as a second call to Abraham, the first coming at Ur, the second at Haran where he apparently had settled down short of entering into the Promised Land.
