Jacob’s Vow vv. 20-22

i is the proof

The reality of Jacob’s experience is shown by his determination to do some thing about it. There were doubtless some weaknesses in connection with the vow Jacob made but it is a great thing that he realizes his need of God and pledges his loyalty and gifts to Him. New converts often show marked weak nesses in their expressions and actions but if their attitudes toward God are right these other things will right them selves as there is growth in grace. Memory Verse: “Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest” (Gen. 28:15). Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, had sinned. His brother Esau had threatened to pun ish him, so Jacob knew that to be safe he must leave home. Far away lived an uncle whom he planned to visit. The journey was long, and there was no way to get to his uncle’s house other than walking. Doubtless Jacob became lonely and weary on the journey. One night Jacob made a pillow of stones upon which to sleep. While he was sleeping God gave him a dream. A ladder was set upon the earth. Its top reached to Heav en. The angels of God were going up and down the ladder—from Jacob to God and back again. The Lord stood above the ladder and said, “ I am the Lord . . . the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it and to thy seed . . . and, behold I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land . . .” When Jacob’ awakened, he said, “ Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.” Jacob was frightened and arose early in the morning and took the stone which had been his pillow and made a pillar out of it and poured oil over the stone. He called the name of that place Bethel which meant “House of God” . Jacob promised that if God would be with him and bless him as He had promised, that the Lord would be his god, and of all that God gave to him he would return the tenth. Perhaps if Jacob had been able to stay in his home with his family, God would not have spoken to him as He did. When he was alone, God could talk with him better. Even though Jacob had sinned, God was willing to forgive him and to use him to be a blessing to all of the world. Sometimes God has to allow us to be quiet in bed from sickness or disease so that He can talk with us. Sometimes He has to take us away from our loved ones and our homes that we might be willing to listen to His voice. Whatever He al lows to come into the lives of those who are His children, they can know that His promise is true today also, “ Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest” .
