dealings as Joseph received from his own brethren. They would likely have harbored hatred in their hearts toward those who had been so heartless and mean. But Joseph had faith in God which enabled him to rise above any personal injuries he had received. He realized that God had something in store for him and his people which at the time was not evident. He trusted in a God who can change the experiences of darkness into experiences radiant with divine glory (v. 20). Things looked dark for Joseph when he was sold into Egyp tian bondage “ but God” mightily under took for him. The kind of God Joseph served enabled him to exemplify a for giving spirit toward those who had wronged him (v. 21). Then Joseph’s sublime faith is seen in verse 24 where he looks forward to the time of Israel’s removal from Egypt into the Land of Promise. Joseph had been sold by his brothers as a slave into a distant land. Many times he became homesick and wondered why God had allowed such a terrible thing to happen to him. He might have stopped worshiping God because of what He allowed to happen. Rather Joseph knew that “ All things work together for good to them that love God.” He put God first in his life even when it was difficult to be true to Him in a foreign land. Because Joseph continued to trust God regardless of what hap pened, God finally used him to save the Egyptians and the Hebrews from star vation during a famine, and to provide a new homeland for his aged father and for his brothers and their families. When Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt and found him to be the ruler, they felt that surely he would use his power to punish them severely for their cruelty to him many years before. Joseph said to them, “ God did send me before you to preserve life . . . so now it was not you that sent me hither, but God.” Joseph saw now the reason that God had permitted him to come to Egypt; he knew now that He doeth all things well. God’s Word says, “ In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” How true this promise was in the life of Joseph. How true it will be in your life if the Lord Jesus Christ is your personal Saviour, and if you are willing to put God’s plan first in each part of your life. Then you will know that whatever happens that is dis appointing or upsetting is just a part of His plan for you that you might be used in the best possible way for His glory.
