FINISHING SHOTS PHENOM FLOYD: When Rocky Marciano retired and relinquished the heavyweight championship, the No. 1 and No. 2 challengers, Archie Moore and Floyd Patterson, respectively, were matched for the vacant crown. Moore, 42, was seeking to become the oldest heavyweight champion ever, while Patterson, 21, hoped to become the youngest. On November 30, 1956, at Chicago Stadium, youth overcame experience. Patterson blasted Moore to the canvas twice in the fifth round, forcing the referee to stop the bout at 2:27. To this day, Patterson remains the youngest undisputed and lineal heavyweight champion in boxing history.
