wonderful evening and an excellent final practice for the students. On Wednesday Mr Greaves and I had the pleasure of meeting our students involved in the Myth and Voice Workshops that have been running this term. This is a project led by Dr Efi Spentzou from Royal Holloway University of London. This year the students explored the myth of the talented weaver Arachne and the Goddess Athena. Through art, debate and storytelling the students explored alternative endings to the story, focusing on collaboration and relating it to their school life. It was a wonderful opportunity to give the students a chance to use their voices and we were incredibly impressed by their presentations. Last week the Maths department celebrated Pi Day, an annual celebration of by inviting students in Years 7 and 8 to illustrate the mathematical constant π as creatively as possible. This week we had the pleasure of judging the amazing entries that included jokes, cakes, games, art, three dimensional models and even musical compositions. Congratulations to the winners! Thank you to everyone for entering into the spirit of Red Nose Day. It has been a wonderful day, filled with laughter thanks to the excellent joke competition organised by Mr Doan and we have raised funds for a good cause.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

info@waldegravesch.org STAY CONNECTED WITH US:

Last week we highlighted the International Day of Happiness and the importance of sharing and caring. The Mental Health Foundation has an excellent podcast episode on the subject, talking about the importance of kindness and howe it can impact on only our mental health but that of those around us, listen here: ’Kindness matters to our mental health’. The positive impact of kindness, is also highlighted as one of their useful tips about ‘Looking after your mental health during Ramadan’. Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for young people and their parents or carers. Supporting young people through exams is all about reducing stress, optimising wellbeing and putting good study processes in place. Parents and carers play a vital role in helping their young people maintain a positive outlook in the run-up, during and after exams are over, so it was wonderful to see seventy parents at our recent in person exam stress workshop. If you were unable to attend, here is a recording of a similar webinar run by the Anna Freud Centre School and College Support Service, who will run this event again, live on Tuesday 29th April 17:00-18:00. You can register to attend here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11

This week we had an assembly where we discussed International Women’s day and British Science Week. Students continued to get feedback from teachers regarding their mock exams and this process will continue up until the Easter break. All week the school has been filled with wonderful smells as the final students completed their Food and Nutrition practical exams. When I have been able to pop down and take a look, there have been some incredible levels of presentation and I have been impressed by the thought that has gone into the final menus. We are very proud of how well the cohort has done and look forward to them consolidating these results with their exams in the summer. Today students and staff have been wearing red to celebrate Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day (voluntary donations can still be made via ParentPay). We held a House Competition for the Best Joke, with each tutor group sharing their best cheesy joke and Year groups voting on their favourites. We will share the winners next week! Next Wednesday, 26 March, we have the Year 11 school photograph and we ask for your support in reinforcing our uniform expectations. Any excessive makeup and fake eyelashes will be removed before the photography can take place.

Please look out for the email to pay for Easter revision sessions if you have signed up to those. The final details, dates and times will follow shortly.

Have a good week!

MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen “When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily as if they tip-toed into the world when we were all looking the other way.” Through the eyes of nine-year-old Ade, we see a dystopian London be infiltrated by the “Bluchers”, menacing plants, dissolving all buildings in sight. Ade’s stabil- ity is at risk, and with a mother to care for and no chance of escape, he’s all on his own. Its unique exploration of themes such as depression, sacrifice, bravery and death make this book, despite it being a science fiction, radiate reality. Ade’s perspective of his story is handled with maturity and care, reflecting his role as a young carer that could easily place him as one of the thousands in our world. At a time of world conflicts infiltrating our lives, the ‘Boy in the Tower’ makes readers believe in true, beautiful human kindness through the relationships Ade builds throughout the novel. This book is for anyone who needs a pick me up, and is an incredibly accessible read for all! - Aisha Y, Year 12

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE

Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Many maths puzzles enhance logical reasoning. When playing maths puzzles, children need to follow a set of specific rules or steps, to come up with the correct answer. This process helps children to organise their thoughts. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solu- tions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!

On Friday last week the Year 7 & 8 cricket team took part in the Middlesex schools indoor cricket competition. The team qualified for the semi-final by winning their final pool game vs Bishop Ramsey school. We fought hard in the semi-final, but were knocked out after holding on until the very last over. The team finished in a very creditable joint 3rd place. Well done to all those involved. This week saw Year 7 and 8 Netball Teams play their first home games of the season. Both teams faced Christ’s and RPA, while they lost these matches there was some fantastic netball played - Chloe H was named Y7 POM, while Stella K was POM for Y8. Also well done to Jasmine G, 10PGU, for taking part in the English Schools Cross Country Championships on Saturday 15 March. She came 127th out of nearly 400 competitors, a brilliant achievement. Great efforts this week from all our players - keep up the hard work!
