4 Classify the expressions. Read the expressions in the table. Tell the class they are examples of greeting, farewell, and courtesy expressions. Remind students that we use them to be polite. Explain that courtesy means polite. Wave your hand. Elicit Goodbye. Tell them Goodbye is a Farewell expression, and mime people separating. Then wave your hand saying Hello and elicit that it is a Greeting , used when people meet (mime people meeting). Read and mime the expressions and have students mark them under the correct headings. Repeat the procedure with Thank you and You’re welcome . Wave your hand for Nice to meet you! Elicit the correct heading after each expression. Check answers as a class. Praise students saying Excellent!, Right! Well done! Encourage students continue working hard. 5 Look at the pictures. Use the phrases in Activity 4 to complete the sentences. Ask students to look at the pictures and have students identify the actions the children are doing. Read out the polite sentences. Have them complete the sentences. Ask students to check answers in pairs. Call out two students to read their answers and write them on the board. Check they are using the correct sentences from Nice to see you. or Nice to meet you.

Warm Up Move around the classroom and greet a student at random. Say, Hello, (their name)! How are you? Encourage them to reply. Continue the dialogue, saying, That’s nice! Goodbye , ______ ! with the student’s name. Elicit the following expression: It was nice to see you! and close with, Thank you , ! Have students get up and move around the classroom, greeting each other and continuing the dialogue with their real names in the same way.

Wrap Up Write the following dialogue on the board:
