Model the first expression in front of the class and have students repeat them. Have students complete the dialogues using the expressions from the box. Check answers orally. Have students practice the dialogues in pairs. Walk around helping with pronunciation when needed. Invite students to come to the front and role play the dialogues. Encourage them to use appropriate body language. 2 Work in groups. Mime the courtesy expressions in Activity 1. Read the dialogues aloud and ask students to repeat. Form groups of three. Tell them to take turns with a friend role-playing the dialogues. Walk around the classroom and monitor students’ role-playing. Provide support with pronunciation. Give positive feedback. Ask volunteers to perform their role-play for the class. Praise students with positive feedback. Teaching Tip Although it is often preferable to pair students with mixed abilities for role plays, sometimes, if there is time at the end of the activity, you can pair more advanced students and encourage them to extend the dialogues. Wrap Up Display Big Book 1 pages 2-7. Point to the title and ask, What’s the title of the story? Rules for a School in New Zealand. Ask students to listen to the rules at school again. Play Track 10 . Pause the recording and have students repeat the rules. Write on the board incomplete sentences of the rules that students listened to and repeated. Have them complete the sentences while you play the recording again. Have students work in pairs to check their answers. Write classroom rules and courtesy exprressions on index cards. Ask a student to come up to the front choose a card and read it to perform the action. Have the class to identify the action and decide under which column that phrase should be. Reapeat with different cards and students. 1 Read and complete the expressions. Have students open their Activity Books to page 12. Encourage students to describe the pictures. Have students identify each situation. Ask, What do you say when? Point to the pictures and convey the meaning of each situation with the students.
