We make mealtimes matter for those who may need it most. Born out of a passion for great food, apetito | Wiltshire Farm Foods has been making a real difference to the lives of those we serve for over 60 years. We are the leading provider of meals to the Healthcare, Care Homes, Education and Social Care sectors and we deliver meals to around 150,000 customers in their own homes across the UK, through our Wiltshire Farm Foods business. We develop and produce our high-quality, delicious meals right here in Trowbridge. We’re proud of our local heritage - we can trace our origins here back to 1928 and we want to keep Trowbridge as our home.
Why we’re building Kitchen West →
Our history in Trowbridge began in 1928, when Waldens Wiltshire Foods was founded. More than nine decades later, Trowbridge is still apetito | Wiltshire Farm Foods home and it’s where we want to remain to retain our loyal staff and skills. The last 25 years has seen continuous year on year growth and with that growth comes the requirement to meet increasing customer demand. In our current kitchens we are producing 1.2 million main meals and 300,000 sweets per week, but to meet that increasing demand, we need additional capacity. Our meals are currently made by 470 kitchen staff and supported by 200 support staff – a significant number of whom live in Trowbridge. An essential part of our expansion plans is to secure the long-term future of apetito in Trowbridge for the benefit of our highly skilled team.
Over the last few years, we have purchased a section of land from the Airsprung Group PLC, as well as the former site of Bradfords Building Merchants and two bungalows. We also closed our Pie Site facility, which along with the purchased land will make up the site for ‘Kitchen West’. The employees who worked at Pie Site were all offered new roles at our current meals site.

Deconstruction →
Before we start to build the new Kitchen West, our ambition is to deconstruct and demolish the existing run-down site in a way that is sustainable, re-using and recycling materials where possible. We engaged circular economy experts, Reusefully, to complete a Pre-deconstruction Audit. We are currently proposing: • Looking at the feasibility of REUSING one of the larger buildings on the site of Kitchen East. • Working with steel recycling companies to try and recondition and reuse/recycle the remaining steel on site. • Aiming to recycle concrete foundations on site and use the crushed material in the new foundations. The proposed strategy could eliminate over 1500 truck movements to and from the site. • Looking to support local community projects with reclaimed materials.
We will be ensuring minimal disruption in this work and our contractors will be adhering to strict dust control measures and protection of air quality. Working hours will be strictly controlled, and noise reducing equipment and strategic scheduling will be employed to limit noise and ensure all activities align with local regulations and minimise disruption. Recognising the site’s ecological sensitivities, we will implement robust protections during this deconstruction phase. All demolition and deconstruction activities will be conducted in accordance with ecological best practices, with licensed ecologists overseeing works where required.

Our ambition for Kitchen West is to build a new production facility which apetito and the Trowbridge community can be proud of. OUR VISION IS TO CREATE A WORLD CLASS REGENERATIVE KITCHEN FOR TROWBRIDGE.
The proposed new kitchen will have capacity for 6 production lines. The position of the production facility on the site will be set back away from the boundaries, to protect the light and amenity of adjacent dwellings. The proposed development will contain new production and packing areas, as well as a car park, staff restaurant, customer facilities and green spaces for staff. We’re engaging our existing workforce on the proposed design of the new facility. Our ambition is to deliver a comfortable internal environment with good air quality, access to daylight and views out, and comfortable working temperatures.

Transport →
Commercial vehicles will enter and exit the secured service yard area using the existing access point off Canal Road. This is currently how commercial vehicles access and exit the site. The existing site comprises of a significant amount of employment floorspace which whilst currently vacant could be brought back into use. Therefore, the proposals do not represent a material increase in floorspace and are unlikely to result in a material change in traffic flow on the surrounding road network. The car park, pedestrian and cycle access will be via the existing access, formerly used by the builder’s merchant further along Canal Road. Car parking provision will meet the needs of the proposed development. This will ensure parking demand for the development can be contained on site and not be displaced onto surrounding roads. A Travel Plan for staff will be prepared to encourage staff to walk, cycle or use public transport where possible. A survey has been undertaken of existing staff travel habits to inform likely travel modes of future staff within the new development. A large proportion of apetito’s manufacturing staff already walk to work and it is anticipated that this will continue.

Our Sustainability Ambitions →
A WORLD-CLASS REGENERATIVE KITCHEN FOR TROWBRIDGE Our vision for Kitchen West is for it to be “a world-class regenerative kitchen for Trowbridge”, and one of the most sustainable food production factories in the UK. This vision is supported by our sustainability framework, which we created with KLH, a leading sustainability consultant. The framework is broken down into six headline objectives, as well as 22 sub-objectives with associated targets. The following objectives you will read about are sustainability ambitions we are currently working through.
Objective 1: Net Zero 2040
• No Gas • Zero GWP refrigerants • 100% renewables • Low embodied carbon construction
Kitchen West will play a key role in our decarbonisation strategy and commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2040. We are striving to design a kitchen that despite significant steam requirements for cooking, can operate without fossil fuels (gas) and therefore generate zero Scope 1 emissions. This is however incredibly challenging – not only is some of the technology not widely proven, but the “Spark Gap” in the UK – the premium price we pay for electricity over gas, is greater than anywhere else in the world. However, we are continuing to explore opportunities whilst looking to lobby Government to address this challenge. We will use Refrigerants with Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and maximise the use of Solar photo-voltaic panels to generate zero carbon electricity.
Objective 2: Water Lean
• Rainwater Harvesting • Water re-use • High efficiency toilets/sinks • Low potable water use in construction
Kitchen West will utilise technology including rainwater harvesting and low-flow fittings to reduce mains water consumption. During construction, we will use recycled or reused water where possible, to further reduce our usage of mains water. Respecting this valuable resource means treating all wastewater to high standards to reduce loads on the existing sewerage system. Allowing rainwater to soak into the ground and reducing runoff to natural levels is key to ensuring future water security.
Objective 3: Embrace the Circular Economy
• Deconstruction ∙ Reuse ∙ Recycle • Low waste design
• Sustainable build materials With Kitchen West, we have a clear opportunity to embrace the circular economy. The circular economy is a system where materials never become waste. Instead, products and materials are kept in circulation through processes like maintenance, reuse and recycling. In addition to our deconstruction ambitions of the old site, we are aiming for: 1. Low Waste Adaptable Design • Designing to standard product dimensions where possible. • Maximising end of life value of building components using reusable elements. 2. Sustainable Building Materials • Using re-used and recycled materials in the building where feasible. • Low embodied carbon construction - exceeding Wiltshire Council benchmarks. 3. Minimising Construction Waste in line with Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) standards 4. Minimising Operational Waste • No waste to landfill (including food waste).
• All edible food waste diverted for human consumption. • All non-edible food waste sent to Anaerobic digestion.
Objective 4: Making a real difference to Trowbridge
• Biodiversity 15% net gain • Local employment • Ethical construction
As the largest private employer in the local area, apetito employs many Trowbridge residents. The new kitchen will provide valuable new local employment opportunities, as well as securing the future of our current workforce. We want to build one of the UK’s most sustainable production sites to make a real difference to the planet, Trowbridge and our employees.
Objective 5: A Workplace to be Proud of
• BREEAM Excellent • WELL standard • Air/thermal/noise comfort • Accessibility
Our ambition is to achieve at least a BREEAM Excellent standard, a certification scheme for sustainable builds. Achieving the Excellent rating means a building has achieved a high level of sustainability by scoring at least 70% on a comprehensive assessment of its environmental impact across various categories like energy efficiency, water usage, materials, and waste management. We will also be looking to encompass principles of the WELL Standard, focusing on the features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.
Objective 6: Safe, Secure and Ethical
apetito is dedicated to doing business in an ethical way. We have been members of the Ethical Trade Initiative since 2016 and are committed to partnering with suppliers who address the risks of modern slavery. As we build Kitchen West, we will only use key building products with responsible sourcing certifications. Solar PV panels will only be sourced from areas not associated with risks of modern slavery. We require all contractors working on site to pay their staff in accordance with the requirements of the Real Living Wage - as specified by the Real Living Wage Foundation.
Biodiversity and Ecology It’s not only people that call Trowbridge home but flora and fauna too. With the River Biss running along the western boundary of the site and the Kennet & Avon Canal running along the northern boundary,
apetito takes its ecological responsibilities seriously. We’re working closely with John’s Associates, a local environmental consultant. They have been undertaking surveys on site since 2021 looking at UKHAB/Conditions, bats, badgers, reptiles, invasive non-native plants, trees, landscape and visual character. We will liaise closely with the Council’s ecologist, tree and landscape officers during the planning process to ensure local ecology is suitably protected and will submit the following with our planning application: ▶ Preliminary Ecological Impact Assessment ▶ Bat Survey, Mitigation and Enhancement Report ▶ Reptile Survey Report ▶ Landscape and Visual Appraisal ▶ Landscape and Ecology Masterplan ▶ BNG Report and Metric ▶ Construction Ecological Management Plan ▶ Habitat Management and Mitigation Plan We recognise that supporting nature is vitally important, and our ambition is to try and deliver 20% biodiversity net gain (BNG) on the site. This exceeds the Environment Act 2021 target which asks for 10% BNG and current Wiltshire Council requirements. We’re currently in the process of developing detailed green spaces with a landscape architect and welcome input and ideas from the community.
