Who doesn’t love eating delicious foods for a good reason? Downtown Cornwall was transformed into a food lover’s paradise on August 22 as the inaugural Cornwall Food Fest got underway. Fourteen food trucks added to the excel- lent array of downtown restaurants for a one- day celebration of food andmusic. Cornwall Food Fest is a joint effort between Beyond 21 and the Downtown Business Improvement Association. “We created a festival atmosphere in one of the more vibrant areas of our city,” said organizer JaneMcLaren. “Food Fest offered the opportunity to highlight different tastes that peoplemay not be familiar with and, at the same time, helped draw attention to all of the wonderful merchants and restaurants that call Downtown Cornwall their home.” Food trucks from across Eastern Onta- rio served up some interesting choices that include Louisiana barbecue, Italian gelato, Mexican churritos and, of course,

This past weekend proved to be quite an exciting one for local athletes. Over 650 athletes laced up their running shoes to participate in the Cornwall Triathlon, ma- king it one of the biggest sporting events in the region. Even children were welcomed to join, on August 22. In all, over 100 kids participated in the event and all were rewarded with a well deserved medal. In addition, Bicycle World donated a bicycle to be won by a draw. The event was held at the Cornwall Aquatic Centre with the swimportion of the triathlon taking place in the indoor Aquatic Centre pool. The triathlon has grown to become a hi- ghly-competitive event, attracting athletes from across Canada and the United States, and this year was no exception. The list of participants also included some world-class athletes including Joanna Brown, Alex Hin- ton and John Rasmussen, all triathletes in the Canadian Development Team. The course record holder, Chuck Perreault, from Que- bec, was also back. The Cornwall Triathlon is seen as a tune-up for the ITU World Cup

Ron Crawford simply wanted a panel truck. So he found one in London, Ontario, he bought it and proceeded to restore it. After eight years of hard work, the vehicle was finally ready to showcase. “All of themotor has been redone,” he explained. “It’s a 235. It’s nearly all original.”The truck, painted yellow and red, attracted several individuals, curious as to what the owner of Classic Auto Glass had brought to the car show. “It gets a lot of looks and so far, I haven’t had any problems with it.”

Plus d’une cinquantaine de voitures dans le parc Lamoureux

Les amateurs de beaux bolides de Cornwall et des environs se sont donné rendez-vous au parc Lamoureux, le 23 août dernier. La troisième édition du festival annuel In Motion Show & Shine, organisé par le Club Kinsmen de Cornwall, a attiré plus de 300 individus ainsi que plus de 50 voitures. « C’est un très beau festival », a-t-il souligné. « Je me suis procuré cette machine il y a à peine deux mois. C’est la première fois que je l’amène à un festival de voitures. » Dave Schwager, qui s’est rendu à Cornwall de Trenton, se disait excité de pouvoir mon- trer sa Firebird 1989 à d’autres amateurs de voitures. « C’est un très beau festival », a-t-il souligné. « Jeme suis procuré cettemachine il y a à peine deux mois. C’est la première fois que je l’amène à un festival de voitures. » Le bolide gris, doté d’un toit en T, a su atti- rer beaucoup d’admirateurs. « Je n’ai réparé que quelques petites choses », a expliqué l’homme de Trenton. « La voiture est en très bon état. » Les visiteurs ont eu droit à plusieurs modèles de voitures dont des muscle cars , des voitures classiques et antiques ainsi que des bolides importés. « C›est un grand jour pour retrouver des vieux amis et de rencontrer de nouvelles personnes dans la communauté », a déclaré Jody Archambault, président du festival et membre du Club Kinsmen. « Le parc Lamou- reux est phénoménal et nous avons un front de mer merveilleux. » Plusieurs membres du Olde Car Club de Cornwall étaient présents à l’événement dont Ken McLaughlin qui avait amené, entre autres, ses deux trésors, soit un Cut- lass Supreme 1974 ainsi qu’un camion Che- vrolet 1977. « Il y a toujours plusieurs de nos membres ici », a-t-il indiqué. « Ça nous permet de discuter de notre passe-temps favori. » Mais il n’y avait pas que des bolides. De la nourriture ainsi qu’un circuit Hot Wheels ont su divertir les enfants. « Les enfants semblent en profiter et les adultes en profitent un peu trop,» a déclaré en riant Jody Archambault. M. Archambault souhaite que l’événe- ment croisse davantage l’année prochaine. « C›est bon pour la ville et ça attire des visi- teurs dans la communauté », a-t-il précisé. Les fonds amassés lors de l’événement iront directement à l’organisation Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs.

Les amateurs de bandes dessinées japo- naises se sont donné rendez-vous au Centre civique, le 22 août dernier, afin de prendre part à la deuxième édition du festival Co- tiCon. Après avoir assisté à plusieurs autres événements semblables ailleurs, Annie DeRochie s’est rendu compte qu’un pareil congrès pourrait être organisé à Cornwall. «Nous avons vu beaucoup de gens de Cornwall et de la région participer à ces événements à Ottawa et àMontréal, a-t-elle expliqué. Après avoir rencontré plusieurs personnes intéressées par ce style d’événe- ment, j’ai décidé de créer quelque chose de similaire ici à Cornwall. » CoTiCon est un congrès de cosplay avec une journée complète d’activités, y compris des jeux vidéo, des mascarades, des sketchs ainsi que la présence de plusieurs invités spéciaux, dont Geoff Allan, comédien de doublage, ainsi que Calamity, Purblind et Nefer, tous des cosplayers. Plusieurs participants s’étaient dotés de costumes à fière allure. C’est le cas de deux individus, qui ne voulaient pas dévoiler d’où ils venaient, qui ont créé des costumes d’un chevalier et d’une princesse. Ces derniers, qui représentaient des personnages du jeu vidéo Lineage 2, n’ont pas manqué d’attirer les regards. « Ça nous a pris plusieurs heures pour les créer », a confié le jeune homme, derrière sonmasque. «Ma lance, elle, nous a pris plus de cinq heures à terminer. » Fait à noter : les objets utilisés pour la création de la lance, qui pèse au moins 20 livres, provenaient

Mais bien que le cosplay soit une activité très sociale et bénéfique, Mme Boutin sou- ligne qu’elle peut s’avérer onéreuse. « Cer- taines personnes achètent leur costume déjà complété, tandis que d’autres com- mencent à zéro. Ça peut vous coûter cher, tout dépendant où vous magasinez. » De plus, les multiples festivals qui ont lieu dans les grandes villes de la région débordent souvent de participants. C’est pourquoi l’artiste estime que la patience est essentielle à la réussite d’un cosplayer. « La plupart du temps, les cosplayers doivent se
lever tôt pour être les premiers en ligne pour les événements. Nous devons donc appli- quer le maquillage, la perruque, les vête- ments et les chaussures aussi rapidement que possible », a-t-elle indiqué. « Entretenir le maquillage et la perruque au cours de l’ensemble de la convention est aussi très difficile. » Même si ce loisir semble gagner en po- pularité auprès des amateurs de bandes dessinées japonaises, Mme Boutin ajoute que ce n’est pas tous les gens qui en sont des habitués. « Nous ne pouvons pas éviter les regards stupéfaits que l’on nous donne à bord des autobus, mais on ne laisse pas ça nous empêcher de profiter de notre passe- temps ! »
Un passe-temps qui gagne du terrain Mais qu’est-ce que le cosplay? Dictionary. com définit l’activité comme étant « l’art ou la pratique de porter des costumes qui dépeignent des personnages de bandes dessinées, de manga, d’animation ou de science-fiction ». Pour en savoir davantage au sujet de ce loisir intéressant, Le Journal de Cornwall a consulté Camille Boutin, une artiste de la région ainsi qu’une talentueuse cosplayer. « Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’ai été tout sim- plement étonnée par le travail consacré à chaque costume et comment les gens se transformaient en une personne tout à fait différente », a déclaré la jeune étudiante de la Cité. « C’est un passe-temps très positif

DIRECTIONS: Snip through the fat strip on the steaks in 3 places, so that the steak retains its shape when grilled. Combine the red wine, onion, mustard, garlic, salt, and pepper. Lay the steaks in a shallow non-porous dish and pour over the marinade. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours. Remove the steaks from the refrigerator 30 minutes before you intend to cook them to let them come to room temperature. This is especially important if the steak is thick, so that it cooks more evenly and is not well done on the outside and raw in the middle. Sear both sides of the steak—about 1 minute on each side— over a hot barbecue. If it is about 2.5 cm (1 inch) thick, keep it over a hot barbecue and cook for about 4 minutes on each side. This will give a medium-rare steak—cook it more or less, to suit your taste. If the steak is a thicker cut, move it to a less hot part of the barbecue or further away from the coals. To test the readiness of the meat while cooking, simply press it with your finger—the more the meat yields, the less it is cooked. Brush the mushrooms with the olive oil and cook them alongside the steak for 5 minutes, turning once. When you put the mushrooms on the grill put the rosemary branch, if using, in the fire to flavor the meat slightly. Remove the steak and set aside to rest for 1-2 minutes before serving.
