Young Forwarder Network
Lawyer Bruce Hailey of Salvus Law in Manchester met with YFN members in the region to provide guidance on the topic of Staying on the right side of Customs compliance. He provided real-life examples of the repercussions resulting from poor Customs compliance and lack of due diligence. Around 20 individuals joined Harris Hay of Cardinal Global Logistics, NW YFN chair, for the event and left with a clearer understanding of good practice in this area. In the East London region, DP World London Gateway kindly hosted an insight day exclusively for members of the YFN on 4 March. This visit to the port included a presentation covering all aspects of landside and shipside activity, followed by an outside terminal port tour to see containerships, trucks and rail freight in operation. Members of the YFN Solent region recently did their bit to promote the industry to students at Fareham College, part of the South Hampshire College Group. The Solent region chair, Louie Turner of KTL Europe (UK) Ltd, his colleague Tom Passfield, and Peter Sanders of Gerlach Customs Services UK, talked to a group of second-year Digital Software T-level students explaining what they do, how they got into freight forwarding and the range of forwarding activities that require digital knowledge and platforms. Getting up close to the quay cranes and vessels at berth certainly puts the size of the operation in perspective. The BIFA Young Forwarder Network (YFN) has been active in quarter one with both in-person and virtual events taking place YFN members kick-off year with busy quarter
A s readers know, the BIFA YFN was established in 2019 to provide a social networking experience for apprentices and others new to the freight forwarding industry. Meetings take place both in-person and online, with individuals being given the opportunity to shape the agenda and lead meetings. Meetings will involve a guest speaker who may have expertise in a specific topic or has an inspiring career development story. Attendees will leave the meeting with greater knowledge, confidence and contacts, all of which will help them develop and provide a better customer experience. Virtual events In January, 140 individuals attended the virtual YFN presented by Curt Wilson and Kiel Ursin of Boomerang Carnets entitled ‘Understanding the use of ATA Carnets’. This document can seem complicated and difficult to manage, but for certain shipments of goods for exhibition, tours or filming projects, the benefits of using an ATA Carnet outweigh the initial effort and smooth the
movement of items from country to country before their final return to origin where the document is closed and the security deposit returned. Attendees fired multiple questions at the speakers during the event and left with a greater understanding of this special procedure. The second virtual event took place late in February and saw Graeme Wilkinson, BIFA training development manager, outline the new BIFA Bitesize training courses. BIFA Bitesize was launched in January and provides a suite of online courses available to ALL employees of BIFA Member companies. The courses are free of charge and individuals can choose to complete just one or all of the available modules. See https://bifa.org/training- development/bifa-bitesize/ for more information and how to access BIFA Bitesize training. In-person events Face-to-face YFN events are organised on a regional basis and early 2025 saw events take place in Manchester and East London.
