here are buildings scattered across Texas today that have been standing since 1973. David Koonce knows because every so often, General Shelters of Texas comes across one. For the company’s President and CEO, those surviving structures say something more important than their age. They represent a standard established long before modern manufacturing systems and sophisticated supply chains became part of the business conversation. T

“My father-in-law trained us all in that,” Koonce says. “If we build something or if we tell someone that we’re going to do something, we dang sure better do it.”

Then he gives founder James Campbell’s original version.

“In his words, we damn sure better do it.”

It is a straightforward rule, and General Shelters has spent more than five decades building around it.
