Nescot is one of the very few colleges within travelling distance of London to offer a Higher Education course in Animal Management. Animal and land-based careers are enjoying unprecedented growth in the UK and people are actively being sought to fill skills shortages. The college has devoted more than half of its campus to a modern City Farm and Nescot is now using its years of experience working within the land-based industry to offer a Foundation Degree. This curriculum area has a dynamic, dedicated, enthusiastic team of lecturers who are highly respected by our students. Our members of staff are all qualified teachers who have both vocational and academic experience and they are qualified to degree or Masters Level. They also have extensive practical work experience within the industry, both national and international, and they use this to provide students with industry-appropriate knowledge and skills. We also provide animal care courses at levels 1, 2 and 3 and these have provided a strong progression route for students in the past. In our animal facility we have a wide range of small animals, reptiles and amphibians, both domestic and exotic. Our farm maintains a varied range of livestock animals including donkeys, sheep, goats, alpacas and pigs.
The Foundation Degree in Animal Welfare and Management enables students to develop the skills and knowledge required to work in the hugely varied land-based industry. It gives a broad overview of working with animals as well as giving students the opportunity to develop their knowledge base in animal anatomy, physiology, health, welfare, behaviour and cognition, conservation and animal husbandry. It is designed to provide students with the practical skills required and academic competency to excel within this extensive industry. The Foundation Degree also provides a gateway to a range of Higher Education options. At the same time, this theory is put into practice at Nescot’s substantial animal care facilities. The course gives students the opportunity to develop a high standard of education within the comfort of a vocational setting that is not commonly available at Higher Education Institutions. The BSc (Hons) Animal Management and Conservation (Top-up) Degree has been designed to provide a mechanism whereby graduates of the Foundation Degree in Animal Welfare and Management can top-up their qualification to a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree. Consideration will also be given to applicants with passes in comparable Level 5 modules from other institutions.
