Since its premiere in 1984, Almanac has become a beloved institution among Minnesotans, providing thoughtful analysis and lively discussion of local news and culture. One of the key players behind the scenes of this weekly public affairs show has been Brendan Henehan. He has produced over 1750 Almanac episodes and more statewide political debates than any other Minnesotan. Following over 40 years with Twin Cities PBS (TPT), Henehan has announced that he will retire in May. Almanac’s Producer Brendan Henehan Retiring from Twin Cities PBS

Since the beginning, Henehan, TPT’s Managing Director of Public Affairs, has led Almanac , creating a space that brings together diverse perspectives to provide depth and context to the issues impacting Minnesotans. Almanac is the longest-running program at TPT and Minnesota’s longest- running statewide public affairs program. Its counterpart, Almanac at the Capitol , which began broadcasting in 2002, is the state’s second longest- running TPT program and public affairs program. Almanac's success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its producers, reporters, and staff, who strive to create a space for connection in an increasingly divided world. “[With Almanac ] you have statewide access to an inquisitive audience. We get to be a trusted source of information and a place where people can come to learn and engage in meaningful conversations. When I leave the show, I'm going to miss being a part of that,” Henehan says. Almanac without Henehan is hard to imagine, but as the show looks to the future, it remains committed to being a space where people can come for context and dialogue about Minnesota’s culture and politics – with humorous monologues and history trivia mixed in for good measure. If you value Almanac , donate to TPT in Brendan’s honor! Your gift will help TPT continue to provide trusted public affairs programming that keeps citizens informed and safeguards democracy by providing space for conversations about issues that impact us all. MAY 2023

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA That was winter! I am so glad to welcome May, with all of its lovely tulips, daffodils, and lilacs and the first shoots of fresh asparagus from my garden. My bike is tuned up for some trail rides, and I can finally walk around my neighborhood without my yak tracks. If you are still deciding what your outdoor activities will be this spring and summer, check out season 2 of Outside Chance and find your next new adventure. You can stream all episodes at tpt.org/outdoors or by using the PBS app to watch anytime, anywhere. Throughout May, TPT’s Hype crew members are working on their capstone projects. Hype , our program for youth in grades 9-12, is based on the popular TPT program from the 1990s. This updated initiative is part of TPT’s commitment to mentor the next generation of media makers. The program combines role modeling, media literacy, and hands-on skills to help diverse high-school students uplift their voices across multiple platforms. Learn more on page 10. Also happening this month, SciGirls in the National Parks - the seventh and final season of the PBS program - premieres on May 26. This season focuses on citizen science outdoors, with new episodes airing on TPT 2 at 12:30 p.m. All seven seasons of SciGirls and their accompanying resources are available at tpt.org/scigirls. SciGirls teaches viewers that science is for everyone, and TPT will continue to build on this legacy as we develop our next generation of children’s STEM programming. May is Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month. We have an outstanding line-up of programming, including two broadcast premieres on TPT 2. On May 16 at 9 p.m., American Masters: Name June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV airs, and Fanny: The Right to Rock will be broadcast on May 22 at 9 p.m. Find more AAPI programming on page 9. Finally, I want to take a moment to congratulate Brendan Henehan on his retirement after more than 40 years with TPT. As Almanac’s producer and TPT’s Managing Director of Public Affairs, Brendan will be leaving behind an impressive legacy, which is showcased on page 4.

Your support allows TPT to offer accessible programming that enriches and strengthens our community. Thank you for investing in our mission.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Strobel President and CEO, Twin Cities PBS

just renewed for a second season), encourages people to see the world in new ways. We provide educational resources for caregivers and teachers to support children’s education locally and nationally. TPT also produces Almanac , broadcasting unbiased public affairs coverage at a time when trusted sources are essential to informing citizens.

Maureen McGinn was promoted to Vice President of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at Twin Cities PBS (TPT) in January 2023. This is an abridged version of our conversation. You can read the full interview at tpt.org/vp-major-gifts.

WHAT SETS TPT APART FROM OTHER PLACES YOU HAVE WORKED?

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF DONORS ON TPT?

I have served organizations covering history, art, education, and community service. I had never served an organization that does all these things. TPT does. History programs - like Minnesota Experience - tell the story of how we got to now. Performing arts programs, such as Stage and This is Minnesota Orchestra , showcase Minnesota’s unique art communities. Our science and environmental content, including America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston (which was

The phrase "members like you" is more accurate than most people realize. Eighty- two percent of TPT’s budget comes from members and major gift donors. These gifts allow us to continue broadcasting PBS favorites, such as Masterpiece, Nature, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and Antique Roadshow . Most importantly our members and donors make TPT accessible for all. TPT is a local, independent, and trusted source of programming created for

educators and caregivers, stories that highlight Minnesota for a national audience, and growing our audience by providing more non-broadcast and streaming content available to viewers anytime, anywhere on a variety of platforms.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE BEST ABOUT INTERACTING WITH DONORS?

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING TPT?

I love having conversations with donors to learn about their passions and what inspires them to give. Then, we can help align their giving to a project or program with those passions. We have donors who love that they can dance with their spouse during The Lawrence Welk Show every Saturday, learn how to cook or fix their house, travel the world, attend a great concert, or hear unbiased news coverage. What connects all our donors is that they want to give the gift of TPT to help build a stronger community through public media. They know we provide stellar educational programs, explore stories in depth, and share the voices of those who are not often heard. WHERE DO YOU SEE TPT HEADING IN THE NEXT 5 TO 10 YEARS? WHAT SUPPORT IS NEEDED TO GET US THERE? We are particularly focused on providing more History, Arts, Culture, Science, Education, and Public Affairs content that is entertaining, educational, and empowering. We are also committed to strengthening our endowment to ensure that our programming and resources are available for future generations. TPT has an amazing legacy on which to build. We are well positioned to grow and increase our community impact. We will continue to respond to and reflect our community – through powerful storytelling that represents the amazing and diverse community of which we are a part, robust educational resources for

Hype: Uplifting the Next Generation of Storytellers

Hickman-Winfield states, “Hype is one of the few places young people can share their perspectives and ideas for solving community issues.” VOPs (Visions of Possibilities) – including past Hype crew members and current and former TPT staff – serve as mentors to the crew in the areas of media production, social justice, community service, and more.

At Twin Cities PBS (TPT) we believe media has the power to challenge, connect, and unite.

This belief guides TPT’s youth empowerment project: Hype . Based on the popular TPT initiative Don’t Believe the Hype (1992-2002), Hype empowers youth in grades 9-12 as media creators. Robin Hickman-Winfield – an Executive Producer of the original Hype series– has returned as Hype’s co-creator and Executive Producer. TPT Education Specialist Demetrius Trundle coordinates the Hype programming. In weekly meetings, crew members learn media history, develop media literacy, build community, receive role modeling, and create media content.

“Our VOPs are essential for showing the crew members that they can be the next generation of storytellers to represent their communities,” says Trundle. This year’s crew will be creating social media shorts and longer capstone projects focusing on school violence, mental health, and representation in the arts. TPT looks forward to learning with and from Minnesota's emerging media voices. Stay tuned for Hype updates and a look into the crew’s final projects.

Hype’s goal is to leverage the power of media- making to help Indigenous, Black, Latina(o), Asian American, and historically unrepresented youth craft their own narratives and amplify their unique voices. “Use your voice – someone will hear you one day,” says a crew member about the lesson they learned during last year’s Hype pilot. “Don’t doubt yourself.”

SciGirls Explore the Great Outdoors SciGirls invites children nationwide to explore science in the great outdoors! The PBS series’ seventh and final season, SciGirls in the Parks , takes viewers on a journey of America’s national and state park system, highlighting the adventures of curious, smart, and creative kid scientists. Produced by Twin Cities PBS (TPT), these five new episodes will premiere on May 26 on TPT 2 at 12:30 and online at TPT.org/SciGirls and PBSKids.org/scigirls . SciGirls is an Emmy Award-winning PBS series that has inspired children and families around science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and career paths. SciGirls in the Parks continues this tradition by sharing the stories of real girls—not actors—as they team up with adult STEM role models to learn about citizen science. Citizen science initiatives, held in parks nationwide, help researchers collect data on animal and plant species, water quality and other environmental phenomena. From observing fireflies in South Carolina to tracking marine animals on the Alaska Coast to leading trash clean-ups on the banks of the Mississippi River, these real-life SciGirls pitch in to improve their communities. Although SciGirls in the Park s marks the series’ final season, educational outreach in youth-serving learning spaces nationwide continues, and all SciGirls content remains freely accessible at pbskids.org/scigirls and on SciGirls’ popular YouTube channel. Educators can find all media and standards-aligned activities, available in both English and Spanish, at PBS Learning Media ( pbslm.org ), and parents/caregivers can access resources to help with their children’s STEM learning at scigirlsconnect.org .

“For almost twenty years, SciGirls has received sustainable support from the National Science Foundation,” said Sylvia Strobel, TPT’s President and CEO. “This has allowed us to inspire, encourage and excite children, families, and educators with gender-equitable, standards-based STEM content. We are deeply grateful for this opportunity, and excited to leverage our learnings into new science media for youth.”

To Get Organized, Stand Up to Your Stuff By Lisa Kanarek

During my 15 years as a professional organizer, I worked with clients who dreaded sorting through closets overflowing with ill-fitting clothing and file cabinets groaning under the weight of outdated documents. I knew they could sort through boxes and clear out garages on their own. Still, they sought direction and moral support when their confidence continued to shrink along with their storage space. Without someone beside them to provide guidance, they were convinced the piles would continue to grow. There are other options besides relying on someone to work with you in person. Instead, you can schedule one-on-one online sessions with an organizing professional in a different state or country, learn streamlining strategies through YouTube videos and tune into organizing shows for inspiration. Start with Baby Steps Organizing your home in one day is not only unrealistic but an overwhelming project. Cas Aarssen, host of HGTV’s “Hot Mess House,” suggests taking a large trash bag and setting a five- minute timer. Within that time, challenge yourself to gather 21 items you no longer use. Don't be surprised if, after five minutes, you're motivated to keep going. Treat your organizing sessions like any other appointment and block out a specific time — a three-to-four-hour segment is reasonable. Use boxes labeled Keep, Donate and Recycle, and a bag for trash. This system makes the process simple and can minimize distractions. Otherwise, the minute

you leave one room to return something to another, you'll likely lose focus and your motivation to continue your organizing project.

Don't Be Bullied By What You Own "I would love for people to see decluttering and organization as part of self-care and self-growth," says Aarssen. By going through your belongings, you're standing up to things in your home that you're only keeping out of guilt and shame.

"Every time you look at clothes that don't fit, they're telling you that you need to lose weight," she says. "They're bullying you."

This applies to other items you may not use: your treadmill, weights, and anything else making you feel you're not enough.

I Will Never Be a Grandparent By Barbra Williams Cosentino

It's no secret that grandparents are extraordinary people. They can magically convert a couple of cardboard boxes into a medieval castle and make spaghetti and meatballs out of a misshapen lump of play dough. In a backyard at a birthday party, an older woman stands next to me. We watch a chortling toddler spinning in circles. "He's so cute," the woman says, adding, "My granddaughter is over there," as she points to a pigtailed munchkin wearing a flowery dress and high-top purple sneakers. "Which one is yours?" I don't answer. The lump in my throat is too big. None of them are mine. I don't have children, and now, I don't have grandchildren. Why don't I have children? The answer is complicated — a marriage that ended in divorce at 33, a long period of being single during my prime getting-pregnant years, and a second happy marriage to a man nine years my senior who couldn't envision having a child in college when he was nearing seventy.

Facebook-perfect holidays spent with their grown- up children and their not-so-grown-up grandkids.

I envy grandparents who receive crayoned cards they plaster all over their refrigerators. I envy that they get to hug their grandbabies or proudly show off their tween granddaughter's award for first place in a citywide essay contest. They deserve, rightfully, to celebrate the unique joy of loving the child or children of their children. "The heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for we cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time," writes Douglas Wood, a children's author and songwriter. I have had a wonderful life with abundant riches, even though children and grandchildren have not been part of the package.

Envying Grandparents

Our friends are married or coupled, single, straight, gay, childless or parenting. We've laughed and cried at their children's weddings, admired pictures of their grandkids, and tried to ease their sadness when they couldn't be with them during the pre-vaccination COVID days.

Envy is not a pleasant emotion, but it is a human one. I sometimes envy my friends' lives; their
