THE BLACKSMITH The first Tasker to make his mark on the town of Accrington was master blacksmith Robert. He was well revered in the town and had a street named after him; Tasker Street in the town centre. THE FOUNDER In 1896 his son, the enterprising and ambitious John William, set up shop on Whalley Road, initially selling hardware. This was the foundation of the present company. THE SALESMAN John William's shop expanded at a phenomenal rate and so, to meet demand, son Robert built a warehouse on Horne Street, and then moved on to larger premises on Burnley Road. THE OPPORTUNIST Robert Howarth Tasker took over from his late father in 1953, developing a direct-to-the-public furniture and carpet showroom, finally moving the business to its current location at Queen Mill. THE FORWARD THINKER Through son Robert Philip’s systematic forward planning, the company steadily grew to become one of the North West’s most successful independent furniture retailers. THE INNOVATOR It’s 2001 and Ivor Lefton joins as Managing Director. He masterminds the complete refurbishment of the showroom and now, with continually improved and re-styled displays, he takes the company onwards to its 130th year, always promoting “Taskers of Accrington”, the town with which it shares a proud history.
