Didyouknowthat over 80%of peopleacross theworldwill suffer an episode of back pain at some point in their lifetime? If you are suffering from back pain or sciatica, you knowhowhindering it can be. The Differences Between Back Pain and Sciatica: It can be difficult sometimes to determine the differences between general back pain and sciatica. Sciatica is a specific type of back pain that is caused by a compression

or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body – it is approximately 2 centimeters wide, extending all theway down your back, your buttocks, underneath the piriformismuscle, and to the backs of your legs and your feet. It is made up of several nerves that exit your lower back from the lumbar and sacral levels (L4-S3), transmitting sensation and muscle control. Common culprits of sciatica development include weakness in the gluteal muscles or tightness in the piriformis muscle, as they can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve. Common Sciatica Symptoms: The sciatica symptoms reported from patients tend to vary. Somemay experience a deep ache in the buttocks, while others experience a severe pain radiating down one of their legs. It is also possible to feel a tingling or numbness in the back of the leg, calf, or foot. If left too long without

proper treatment, irritation can become more severe and affect the strength of your leg muscles. Common Sciatica Treatment: The safest, easiest, and most effective mode of sciatica treatment is through physical therapy. Physical therapy examines the root cause of pressure on the nerve and works to quickly alleviate that pressure. Our licensed physical therapistswill analyze the movements of themuscles surrounding the sciatic nerve, in addition to the back and hip joints. They will design an individualized treatment plan based on the specific needs of each patient, in order to strengthen the affected muscles, improve joint flexibility, and prevent problems fromoccurring again in the future. How Can I Find Sciatica Relief? There are some tips you can follow to relieve your sciatica pain on your own. These can be done before coming in for treatments, or in tandem with your physical therapy treatments: • Performing gentle stretching exercises. • Avoidingprolonged sitting.Make sure toget up every 30minutes and change positions frequently. • Putting a pillowbehind your knees when sleeping on your back or between your knees when sleeping on your side. • Using your legs to bend down when picking up objects off the floor, rather than using your back. • Alternating ice and heat on the buttock to reduce inflammation. • Asking your doctor about coming to physical therapy, or giving us a call.

How Successful Is Physical Therapy for Back Pain? A study found in the medical journal SPINE proves both the physical andmonetary benefits to treating back pain and sciatica with physical therapy. It demonstrates that when doctors refer their patients for physical therapy treatments early on in the diagnosis, their patients have shown significant improvement and lowered treatment costs. In this study, patients saved an average of $2736.36 for their low back pain treatment simply by being referred to a physical therapist in the beginning. If you are suffering with back pain or sciatica, consult with your doctor about physical therapy treatments, or contact our office to learn more about how you could benefit. At Pittman Physical Therapy, we aim for speedy and effective recoveries at lowcosts. Call Pittman Physical Therapy today at 901-850-5246. Meet the Pittman Team! MALLORY CEOLLA, PTA

Hello! My name is Mallory Ceolla. I am 27 years old. I’ve lived in Memphis all of my life. I have 3 siblings- one older brother, one older sister, and one younger brother. I would say that my family and I are all very close. I am a proud Aunt to 3 nieces and 2 nephews who I adore!! They keep me busy for sure, and I always enjoy spending time with them. I’m so blessed to have them in my life. My husband and I live in Collierville. We have been together for almost 7 years now! I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, eating good food, hiking and anything outdoors, playing games, and playingwithmy cat, Luna (cats are the best). I knew since high school that I had always wanted to pursue a career in physical therapy. I was always active and athletic as a kid and teenager. I’mpretty competitive and love sports. I played soccer, basketball, and cheerleading as well as ran track and cross country. After researching physical therapy for a paper, my interest grew even

more. I love learning about the body and how it works. I graduated high school as Valedictorian ofmy class in 2011. That fall, I startedcollege at theUniversity ofMemphis. It was here where I met all of my closest friends and my husband. I had such a great college experience as a Tiger and wouldn’t trade my time there for anything! I graduated in 4 years with a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration inExercise andSport Science. Duringmy senior year, I didmy internship at PittmanPTwhich iswhen I firstmet Jeremy and his staff. I was told by my husband and his parents to come to Pittman for my internship since they all had worked with Jeremy before. Little did I know, this place would change my life! I started my internship in January of 2015 and finished inMay of 2015. I was asked to stay and work as a PT tech while I decided what I wanted to do about further schooling,

since PTwasmy ultimate goal. I worked for Pittman PT for 3 years starting as a tech then moving to other positions including receptionist, marketing coordinator, and office manager. In 2018, I made several life changes. I got married, left my job at Pittman, and started the Physical Therapist Assistant programat Southwest. While I was in school, I was so thankful for all I had learned at Pittman PT. It helped me understand a lot more of the material. After one year, I graduated from the PTA program with honors. I startedmy PTA career this August at Pittman PT, and I couldn’t be happier. I knew I wanted to work in out-patient rehab, and I was so happy that they were hiring around the time I needed a job. I look forward toworking here for a long time and being a member of this awesome team! Mallory
