Example 2 Sketching Graphs for Situations

The graphs seen in Example 1 are connected line segments. A graph with connected lines or curves is called a continuous graph. A graph that is only distinct points is called a discrete graph. Discrete graphs are used when the values between the data points have no meaning for the situation. For example, the first graph shown in Example 1 is a discrete graph. Each point in this graph represents the total amount earned for selling a particular number of paintings. The values between those points have no meaning in this situation because a partial painting cannot be sold.
