4.1.1 Graphing Relationships (continued) Example 3 Writing Situations for Graphs

To write a situation for a given graph, first consider the meaning of the x - and y -axis. In the graph given in Example 3, the x -axis represents time and the y -axis represents water level. So, the graph shows how a water level is changing over time. The graph begins with a downward slanting segment, which means that the water level decreases over that corresponding time period. Then the graph shows a horizontal segment, which means that the water level does not change over that corresponding time period. Last, the graph shows an upward slanting segment, which means that the water level increases over that corresponding time period.
