The points in a scatter plot usually do not form a specific figure, such as a single line. However, a trend line can often be drawn through the general pattern formed by the points. The trend line, which may pass through some of the points or none at all, can be used to identify a general relationship, or correlation, between the data sets, as explained in Example 2.
