Algebra 1 Companion Book, Vol 1 – Summer Edition

5.2.4 Transforming Linear Functions (continued) Example 4 Multiple Transformations of Linear Functions In Example 4, Prof. Burger shows how two transformations are applied to the graph of the linear parent function f ( x ) = x to graph the linear function f ( x ) = 2 x + 4.

Example 5 Business Application

In Example 5, the linear function f ( x ) = 0.5 x + 10 is given to describe the total charge for a pizza as a function of the number of toppings x , when the pizzeria charges $10 for a large pizza plus $0.50 per topping. Prof. Burger demonstrates how changing the pricing of the pizza effects the function for the total charge and the graph of the function.
