Algebra 1 Companion Book, Vol 1 – Summer Edition

2.1.2 Multiplication and Division Equations

Key Objectives • Solve equations by multiplication. • Solve equations by division. • Write and solve one-step equations. Key Terms • Multiplication Property of Equality states that if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the new equation will have the same solution. Example 1 Solving an Equation by Multiplication The process for solving a one-step division equation is demonstrated in Example 1. The given equation x /3 = 25 is a one-step division equation because there is only one operation performed on the variable, and that operation is division.

Example 2 Solving an Equation by Division

The process for solving a one-step multiplication equation is demonstrated here. The given equations 120 = 6 t and 4 g = 20 are one-step multiplication equations because there is only one operation performed on the variable in each equation, and that operation is multiplication.
