Algebra 1 Companion Book, Vol 1 – Summer Edition

2.1.4 Solving Multi-Step Equations

Key Objectives • Solve equations that contain like terms. • Solve equations that contain fractions. • Write and solve multi-step equations.

Equations may need to be simplified before being solved. These equations are called multi-step equations. Example 1 Solving Equations That Contain Like Terms If an equation contains like terms on the left or right side, then those terms should be combined to simplify the equation before using inverse operations to solve the equation.

Example 2 Solving Equations That Contain Fractions

Equations that contain fractions can be simplified by multiplying both sides of the equation by the least common denominator (LCD) of the fractions. The result of the multiplication will clear the fractions from the equation. Be sure to multiply each of the equation’s terms by the LCD, even if that term is not a fraction.
