Marijuana charges A 911 call on March 31 in Rockland ended with a pair of drug charges. Police received a 911 alert from a resi- dence on Laurier Street. When they arrived they found a man and a woman arguing. While the officers were dealing with what seemed like a domestic dispute, they noticed some marijuana plants in the apartment. They seized the plants and also arrested the man on drug charges. A 36-year-old Rockland man, name wit- hheld, is charged with marijuana posses- sion and with growing marijuana. He is scheduled for provincial court in L’Orignal

Prescott-Russell Trail group dreams big dreams PLANTAGENET | More partnerships, more users, more work on making the Prescott- Russell Recreational Trail part of a larger regional cycling and hiking trail network linking Eastern Ontario and Western Qué- bec. Those are the dreams and plans of the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail Corpo- ration (PRRTC) outlined during its annual general meeting report March 27. During the past four years the non-profit group’s annual operations budget has bal- looned from $7000 in 2011 to more than $60,000 in 2012. Last year’s budget was about $33,000. The reason for the booming budget is a more aggressive search for revenue sources to support improvements to the trail along with a marketing program to both increase local awareness of the recreational trail and also promote it as a potential destination site for cycle tourism. The Prescott-Russell Trail measures 72 kilometres of paved and unpaved pathway following a former VIA Rail line through Prescott and Russell counties from St-Eu- gène to Hammond and crossing through East Hawkesbury, Champlain and Alfred- Plantagenet townships, The Nation muni- cipality and the City of Clarence-Rockland. The trail sees year-round use. During the spring, summer and fall it is open to cyclists, hikers, and has been used for spe- cial field trips for schools and other groups for natural history studies, star-gazing and observing other astronomical phenomena, birdwatching, and various other activities. During the winter the trail is available for snowmobiling under certain conditions. The trail is not open for ATV use though. During the past several years the trail has become a regular site for various cycling tours. Part of the PRRTC’s strategic plan in- cludes continued promotion of the trail for cycle touring both through its own season brochure and through other venues. The PRRTC also foresees the eventual mer- ging of the Prescott-Russell Trail with other local trail networks in Ottawa, Rigaud and beyond to create a huge regional cycling trail that can become a key part of Eastern Ontario’s recreational tourism sector. Mischief While he was at the Rockland YMCA April 3, a 14-year-old lifted a bottle of cleaning fluid from the janitor’s cart and proceeded to “wash” the windows with the substance. He then went into the Y locker rooms for some more vandalism. He was caught and turned over to police and received a war- ning under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Impaired driver A late-night vehicle fire call for police in Alfred-Plantagenet Township ended up with a criminal charge for the driver. Police
