(d) The New Covenant was promised by the prophet, Jeremiah, and fulfilled in Christ: "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel. and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the _hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: but this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel: After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their in- iquity, and I will remember their sin no more" (Jer. 31 :31-34). In writing to the Hebrew Christians concerning the Lord Jesus, Paul quotes these very words, and applies them to Christ, "the mediator of a better covenant, which was estab- lished upon better promises." (See Heb. 8: 6-13.) This cov- enant is all of grace, shared by Jew and Gentile alike; but the One of whom it speaks was a Jew, "according to the flesh," and the covenant came through Israel. To it our Lord referred when He broke the bread and poured out the wine at the Last Supper saying, "This is my blood of the new covenant ( R. V.), which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matt. 26:28 ). 4. "THE GIVING OF THE LAw." Iri our former studies we have seen that the law was given to Israel. not to the Gentiles. We need not dwell further on this subject here, since much has already been said concerning it, except to add that it was no light matter that the God of heaven should give to human beings the law of righteousness. Gentile gov- ernments have long patterned their laws after the Mosaic Law. And in "the law" there were many beautiful types and sha- Page 176]
