FUN FACTS ABOUT DECEMBER A FASCINATING MONTH It’s here — the most wonderful time of the year has arrived! Many look forward to the holiday season and the month of December all year long to share in the joy of the season, attend festive gatherings, relish in quality time with family, soak up all of the Christmas music, and devour cookies and treats. However, December has some interesting history and facts that have nothing to do with the holiday season. Let’s take a look!

December is the 12th and last month of the year, according to the Gregorian calendar. However, up until 153 B.C., it was the 10th month of the year! (In Roman times, the year began with the month of March.)

Dec. 18 is the beginning of Hanukkah.

The Orion constellation appears in the sky during December. Look southeast to find the three stars of Orion’s belt. In Alaska, Siberia, and the northern parts of Canada, the sun never rises in the month of December!

Dec. 26 is National Boxing Day.

On Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, it’s the winter solstice in the Northern

Hemisphere, bringing the shortest day of the year with the least amount of daylight.

The name “December” comes from the Latin word decem , which means “10.”

Every year, December begins on the same day of the week as September!

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, the full moon appears. It is commonly known as the cold moon because of the frigid conditions starting then.

December is National Pear Month.

Kwanzaa is celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. It originated in 1966 and is based on African harvest festival traditions.

Dec. 4 is National Cookie Day, so get busy baking for the holidays!

Dec. 28 is considered to be the unluckiest day of the year!
