The PUNCHLINE Annual 2020

After the chaos of 2019… welcome to 2020

Focus on county’s business success

If you have made it this far – and why not – you could well have read the feature of comment from 20 businesspeople from Gloucestershire on the year ahead. And if you read the last edition, you may also recall we started this very section summing up just how chaotic and uncertain 2019 had been – and how what people told us we needed was some certainty. Well, as those of you who have read our feature earlier in this magazine will know, businesspeople now feel there is certainty and direction. In short, they feel 2020 is a year of opportunity and action. Do not take our word for it. If you have skipped by our 20 comments on 2020 and need to soak up a little positivity, we suggest going in search of that very article (after you have finished with this one, of course). Every edition we give space over to the topics you see listed to the right-hand side of this page – but this copy contains a special eight-page charity section. We have chosen to showcase a small selection of the simply enormous (100-ish) charities which have benefited from a little-known fund offering seed-funding and one-off payments to such community-based county groups. We are talking about the Commissioners Fund, a pot of money allocated by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire, Martin Surl, whose idea was that a small amount of money in the hands of those who know their communities will have a multiplier effect for the greater good. Cynics have had to accept this has been proved to be no wishful thinking, with the result being a greater sense of community, reduced feelings of isolation and even better lines of communication and trust between the Gloucestershire Constabulary and county residents. In short, lives have been changed for the better and for that, we absolutely salute the initiative l
