are no certificate of character with the Lord. Satan certifies the Anti-Christ and he brings down fire from heaven and causes the image to speak, but the power is not from God. God can- not accept any work at any time from anyone who has not accepted Jesus Christ as his blood-offering. He must be called Lord, but He must actually be Lord, if service is to be done to His glory. All work must glorify the Son of God, as Saviour and Lord. " I never knew you"—a solemn ending to a pro- fessional life. He knows His sheep (Jno. 10:14), but He does not know these. The name of the Lord was upon their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. Discipleship is not a mere professional things—a mere nominal thing. One may be officially baptized and received into the church; may be orthodox and have a life full of services and yet hear Him say depart from Me. How sad to know that He who now says, with outstretched arms, "Come unto Me ," will then say "depart from Me . " Are we sure that we know Him whom to know aright is life eternal, and that He knows us and will say "Come ye blessed of My F a t h e r "! (4) WISE BUILDER. ' 'Built his house upon a rock." Character is set forth in the figure of a house. The first and important thing about a house, a permanent dwell- ing, is a good foundation. God has laid the foundation in .Tesus Christ (Eph. 2:20); no man can lay any other (1^ Cor. 3:11). Upon this foundation a spiritual house can be built which will stand every test. Two houses are seen in contrast; both are subject to the severest tests. Storms must come; the elements combine in hurling their strength against the houses. Sand will be undermined with water; winds will work havoc with the structure; it can- not stand. Temptations and trials visit the children of men, from above, from beneath, from around. The world, the flesh, the Devil! How they beat upon our house: how can it stand it if it be not imbedded in the Rock? At Stanford University a massive memorial arch was built; the earth- quake shook it to pieces, the founda- tion had been laid in broken frag- ments. The builder* had not anticipated an earthquake, but it came and revealed his treachery. All are building; all buildings must be tested. Onlv one kind will abide. Christ is a solid rock (Isa. 26:4, 28:16). Put your faith in
Him as your personal Saviour and Lord. Let the Holy Spirit erect the super- structure in harmony with the will of God- You can then abide all storms; nothing can move your dwelling. All else is sand and awaits the final dis- solution and destruction. (5) WORD OF AUTHORITY. " As one having authority." The authority of the King's message astonished the people, for it was very different from the Scribes. He appealed to the conscience. The ideals set forth in the Discourse were so incomparably above the ideas of any and all other teachers that it was and has been ad- judged an impossibility to obey them. Truth has a ring to it that cannot be mistaken. The quibbling, speculating superstitions of the Scribes brought no conviction, but the message has reached, convicted and converted whole genera- tions of people. POINTS PRACTICAL. The gate is straight that goes to glory. The beaten track the saints have trod is broad enough for the believers. Woe to the wicked, for his wicked way leads to wrath. Lord, Lord, are worthless words from lying lips. Doing the Will of the Father brings blessing. Safety lieth not in the strength of the house, but in the stability of the Are you acquainted with the Big Brother work for wayward boys? Have you any idea of the enormous amount of crime being committed by boys and by men just out of boyhood? The tendency of youth to crime now presents a great problem with which we must deal, and if the tide is not turned in the right direction, it will soon constitute a serious menace. If you wish to learn what the Big Brother Work is trying to do to help in saving some of these boys, write to Chas. T. Younken, 262% South Main street, Los Angeles, Cal. foundation.
