Helping You Chase Your Dreams, Big & Small! Controlling the Controllables by Strengthening Your Underlying Health

pain due to a lack of education on how the body works. And they are often discouraged when

Forty years ago in June 1981, my wife, Georgette, and I established our clinic, Cedar Crest Chiropractic. By the way, if you’re calculating my age, note that, as an exceptional student, I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, at age 15 ... or was it 18 ... can’t recall ... HAHA! At that time, a bad back was an age-related problem. “It’s just my age” was the prevailing justification for finally seeking medical help after years of ignoring it, taking aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs directly linked to liver failure, using prescription drugs directly linked to heart disease and Alzheimer’s, and often getting epidural injections (using a 4–5-inch needle) into your back with limited temporary relief. The American Academy of Neurology finally discouraged these treatments because they had limited long-term benefits. That path to addressing symptoms alone often led to spinal surgery or fusion, which involved cutting out bone, then bolting and screwing the spine together. A large percentage of patients would have reoccurring symptoms within one year . Now, chiropractors are not opposed to these measures for a patient in extreme pain. I’ve recommended some myself. However, the long-term use of these measures often delays appropriate chiropractic spinal care of the underlying health condition, not just the pain . The average age of my patients used to be 55–60. Over the past 15 years, the average age has shifted to 40–45. Of course, I treat babies, toddlers, teens and young adults as well as my star patients older than 80. This shift in average age appears to be due to an increased awareness of the long-term

benefits of chiropractic care as well as the deterioration of the physical health of younger people. The question is, what’s happening to our HEALTH in the USA?

days and wondering why you get sick again. It’s like putting more air into a leaky tire and wondering why it’s

flat again in no time.

Our approach at Cedar Crest Chiropractic is that something can be done about relieving your pain by r estoring, strengthening, and maintaining your underlying health for the long term . Helping you, your family, and friends get out of pain and minimize future health risks enables you to chase your dreams, big and small. It also helps me and my staff get out of bed in the morning knowing we can make a difference for you, our patients! We will continue to educate you on what lifestyle improvements you can confront, inch by inch, so you can partner with us to control the controllables relating to your health. Together, through your own actions, our bimonthly newsletter, and my personal interactions with you during your treatment, we can create miracles!

Most people think you cannot take a drug before there are symptoms; however, according to the American Heart Association, the first symptom of heart disease in over 50% of people is a fatal heart attack … no symptoms today, dead tomorrow! The most viable solution appears to be not just controlling symptoms via the short-term solutions stated above, but also improving a person’s underlying health because symptoms are the last sign of a health problem, not the first! New patients usually arrive at my office in pain, and their goal is to relieve this symptom, which is totally understandable. That’s my goal, too. AND when their painful symptoms are gone, they often assume they have reached their goal. That’s how the general public is conditioned, and drug ads and many prevailing medical practices reinforce this approach. When their pain symptoms are gone , but the underlying CAUSE of these pain symptoms remains , many are vulnerable to reoccurring

DR. BRAADT’S WELLNESS COLUMN Arthritis

I was told I have arthritis. What’s next? People are often diagnosed with arthritis and told that nothing can be done about it. You can only take drugs for the pain, get injections in your knee, hip, or spine, and learn to live with it until you cannot tolerate the pain anymore and the joint can be replaced with surgery. It’s like watching a cavity rot your tooth until you can’t tolerate the pain anymore and then pulling your tooth. Well, that’s not very encouraging. What drives most patients to chiropractic care is spinal pain. There is a public perception of chiropractors as “back doctors.” This is true, as most research demonstrates that chiropractic care is more efficient, costs less, produces higher patient satisfaction, is safer, and generally helps keep patients out of surgery. However, what about the knee, hip, shoulder, or other joints affected by arthritis? In our office, my training allows me to evaluate any joint and to give you a safe, conservative treatment option to drugs and surgery. A doctor of chiropractic (like a doctor of dentistry) requires eight years of formal education. I’ve invested an additional three years in a board certification program in orthopedics (a

Their safety is in question, especially if you must take them for the rest of your life. Chiropractic care is MECHANICAL. We’re the only MECHANICS in health care. That’s what makes chiropractors SPINE SPECIALISTS. Arthritis is mechanical wear and tear, like losing the tread on your tires — THAT’S ARTHRITIS OF THE TIRES . Common medical treatment is CHEMICAL care. Chemical care can save lives. For example, you don’t go to a chiropractor with a heart attack. You immediately go to a hospital and they’ll save your life, and that’s a miracle. Chiropractors are not anti-drug. However, according to the journal Lancet, Americans consume up to 190% more prescription drugs compared to Canada, France, and Germany. This 2017 study ranked the U.S. 24th in overall health out of 190 countries studied. The best countries in terms of health care were Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. The most common treatment in orthopedics for joint pain is steroidal injection. The American Academy of Neurology stated recently that spinal epidural injections may cause some small, temporary improvement, but there’s no meaningful impact beyond three months. It was stated further that the evidence was insufficient to even

SPRING VEGETABLE AND CHICKEN BAKE

INGREDIENTS Celebrate spring with this easy, tasty, herb-packed chicken bake.

The Origins of a Truly American Language: Pennsylvania Dutch People often assume American culture isn’t as rich as other cultures, but that simply isn’t true. Americans have developed unique values, mannerisms, art, music, and even languages across their diverse nation. One great example of this is Pennsylvania Dutch. The language didn’t evolve from Dutch, interestingly enough. It started when early German immigrants needed to escape from the Holy Roman Empire regions of Europe to avoid religious persecution. Many of them escaped to Pennsylvania, which is still 29.9% German today. These immigrants generally didn’t bring many belongings; however, they did bring a rich dialect. So, why is it called Pennsylvania Dutch? Rather than a mistranslation, it’s a corruption of the Pennsylvania German endonym Deitsch , which means “Pennsylvania Dutch/German” or “German.” The terms Deitsch , Dutch , Diets , and Deutsch are all cognates of the proto- Germanic word piudiskaz , meaning “popular” or “of the people.” The language flourished safely within German immigrant communities and religious sects; however, while 10% of the original Pennsylvania Dutch settlers were Amish and Old Order Mennonites, today over 250,000 people speak the Germanic language, mainly in Pennsylvania and Ohio. You might be wondering how this language is different from German, considering its roots. It’s entirely different, as it turns out. Pennsylvania Dutch shares the most similarities with the Palatine German dialect, a small southwestern region of Germany where most Pennsylvanian settlers came from. If you can speak Pennsylvania Dutch, you can likely converse with Palatine Germans to a limited extent. Can you write in Pennsylvania Dutch? Yes! However, not many speakers read and write in it, so it doesn’t have standardized spelling rules. If you’re curious to see it in print, however, look at the only Pennsylvania Dutch newspaper in the U.S.: Hiwwe wie Driwwe. Scholarly efforts have also been made to advance the language, such as the Pennsylvania German Studies minor program at Kutztown University.

PAGE 4 Make Gardening Better With These 3 Ideas!

3 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HARVEST DO SOMETHING BETTER IN THE GARDEN

Plant for Your Health Mass production of your favorite fruits

There’s something beautiful about cultivating your own harvest, but you can grow more than simple backyard vegetables. Help your garden “grow up” by trying something unique this spring. Grow Fun Foods We plant gardens for a purpose, so why not make it fun! Plant fresh basil, tomatoes, onions, peppers, oregano, and more to create a garden worthy of your next homemade pizza. All you will need to buy is a CAULIFLOWER CRUST! It’s GF, high in nutrients because it’s a cruciferous vegetable and a low carb alternative to grains. AND it bakes to a delicious crispy crust without the cauliflower taste! Pumpkin plants can offer fresh gourds for any Halloween fanatic, while new species of fruits and vegetables can create an exciting home-cooking experience. Try the silver cucumber for a sweet taste or pineberries for a

mix between strawberries and pineapples. You just might find a new flavor you love. Go With the Flow Creating a year-round garden that practically takes care of itself means using principles of permaculture, a philosophy of working with, rather than against, nature. Start by analyzing your space and yard. Determine your soil type and layer mulch or cover crops to protect it. Then, begin planting the same way that’s found in nature — trees grow at the top, shrubs and bushes are below, and other small plants and vines intermingle within. Choose crops that help each other grow (like corn, beans, and squash), and offer aid to your garden without digging up too much soil or disturbing its natural process. Permaculture gardening requires thoughtful planning, but once your crops are in place, nature will take its course.

and vegetables reduces their key nutrients. Instead, choose fresh, home-grown varieties to yield greater health benefits. This is good news for those living with heart disease, joint disorders, or other chronic conditions. You can grow a garden chock full of nutrient-rich foods! Colorful fruits, root veggies, onions, and beans are great for joint health, while deep leafy greens can boost heart health. Grow pumpkins so you can harvest the seeds for better brain function, while berries (which have less sugar) can support your liver. Before you dig into these new gardening methods, consult with an expert (organic grower preferred) at a nursery or greenhouse to get the best possible results.
