SKILLS FOR INDEPENDENCE Entry Level 1

Venue: Alton Campus Duration: 1 year/2 years

Teaching & Learning You will learn in small group sizes and have the added support of Learning Support Assistants. On the course, you will predominantly learn in the same group with your fellow students in your tutor group. You will have a base tutor group room to work from and access to the departmental kitchen, college gym and sports hall. You can also enjoy access to our college refectory, including Starbucks, as well as our Learning Hub (Library/Learning Resource Centre). You will also have the opportunity to take part in enrichment clubs such as the Lego club, sports or art. Assessment You will complete coursework for the AQA unit award scheme, to gain certificates of achievement in all subject areas. Progression Students on this course may be able to progress onto an E2 course or be ready for a greater level of independence in adulthood. Entry Requirements A positive attitude to learning and a willingness to undertake community work.

Overview On this Entry Level 1 course, you will have the opportunity to develop your life skills, independence and knowledge of the wider world and community. Your course will be based around the core areas of preparing for adulthood, skills of employability, health, independent living and community. This course helps you learn and develop to be able to go out into the wider world successfully. There is an emphasis on community access and learning through doing. The course will have a focus on getting out into the community, making use for example of our college allotment and local community facilities. On the course, you will also continue to study functional skills in English and Maths at an appropriate level, as well as a range of vocational areas such as sport, catering, drama, outdoor learning, art and horticulture. You will also access the local community enjoying trips to the shops, the library, local museums and galleries, for example. Structure You will undertake a series of projects as part of the AQA Unit Award Scheme which provides a learner-centred experience to meet all of your individual needs. Over the year you will undertake several AQA units to gain certificates in all your subjects. Your week will be structured to have regular visits to the community, alongside classroom-based lessons.
