Structure If you choose to study French A Level, the focus is on French speaking society – not just France but French speaking Canada (Quebec), Belgium, and French-speaking African countries such as Senegal and Mali. We listen to music from these countries and study the song lyrics. We learn about the architecture and make judgements on old and modern styles in the French speaking world. What is the food like and how can we make use of our grammar to understand a recipe? In the second year we get our teeth into current affairs with topics such as immigration and multiculturalism in French speaking countries. How does politics motivate young people in France, Quebec, Belgium, Senegal or Mali? You study a film in the first year and a novel in the second year. You will research a topic of your choice related to the French speaking world. You will be given total freedom to research with guidance from your teacher. You will have weekly one-to-one French conversation lessons which you prepare in advance in order to gain fluency and confidence. Teaching & Learning You are trained to listen to longer passages. You study the grammar so that you are able to form complex sentences and write essays, translate and summarise. You work in pairs and groups and work at your own pace using audio, video, text and internet-based resources. Assessment
Overview You will study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will study highlights of French speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the French-speaking world. You also explore the influence of the past on present day French-speaking communities. Throughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. You will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of your choice.

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4. You should have achieved at least grade 6 in French at GCSE.
