– Speaking: You will practise your spoken German in class with your peers and one-to-one with your teacher, a native speaker of German, to gain fluency and confidence. Teaching & Learning: You work in small groups, pairs or individually at your own pace using audio, video, text, and internet-based resources in the multimedia language laboratory and via virtual learning environments such as Moodle and Google Classroom. A wide range of class activities will help you develop your German language skills – taking part in group discussions, listening to longer passages, understanding grammar to form complex sentences, translate and summarise texts and write essays. Assessment: 100% exam (three exam papers) Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing Paper 2: Writing (two essays - one on film, one on a literary text) Paper 3: Speaking (discussion of a stimulus card plus individual research project) Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at grade 9-4. You will need to have achieved a grade 6 in German GCSE.
Overview German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union and studying it at an advanced level opens opportunities in many careers. You’ll continue to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to a higher level, with a greater emphasis on German grammar to help you to understand and use more sophisticated language. You’ll be encouraged to express your own opinions spontaneously on topics such as lifestyle choices or popular culture in the first year, moving to issues in culture and society in year two. Structure: You will study: – Year 1 topics: aspects of German-speaking society and artistic culture in the German-speaking world. You will look at the everyday life of young people, in terms of family, youth culture and the digital world, plus a wide range of topics such as different traditions, art and architecture, and the cultural life of Berlin past and present. – Year 2 topics: Multiculturalism in German-speaking society and aspects of political life in the German- speaking world. You will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss current affairs affecting German-speaking countries and to look at the changing role of Germany in Europe, Germany since Reunification and issues in modern society. You will also revise and reinforce the first year topics. – One German film and one novel or play over the two years. – An individual research project, investigating a topic related to the German-speaking world. You have total freedom to choose your topic and carry out your research, with guidance from your teacher. – Language work: you will develop and expand your knowledge and understanding of German grammar and vocabulary with constant re-enforcement over the two years.
