PSYCHOLOGY (APPLIED) BTEC National Extended Certificate Level 3 (=1 A Level)

Venue: Alton Campus Duration: 2 years

Teaching & Learning Units 1 and 3 are assessed by examination. Units 2 and 6 are assessed by completing assignments. The assignments combine individual research and taught theory and are based on realistic situations. Assessment 42% coursework and 58% exam based. Your work will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. The BTEC National Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level and carries a maximum of 56 UCAS points. The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Applied Psychology, awarded after successful completion of one year, carries a maximum of 28 UCAS points. You must complete and pass the first year to be awarded a BTEC National Certificate and the full two years of the course to receive the full BTEC National Extended Certificate. Progression This course could lead to careers in sports psychology, occupational health and child psychology. Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at grade 9–4, including English Language & Mathematics. Alternatively, if you have studied at Level 2, you should have achieved a Pass, Merit or Distinction. You should have achieved a grade 4 or 4/4 in Science GCSE.

Overview In the first year of the course, you will study a range of psychological approaches and their applications to real life situations (assessed externally). You will explore four key approaches in Psychology (social, cognitive, learning and biological) and apply these approaches to issues relevant to contemporary society. You will also learn how to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in the scientific process and in psychological research methodology through your own psychological practical implications of your findings. In the second year of the course, you will learn about Health Psychology (assessed externally) and Psychopathology. Structure You will study: – Unit 1 - Psychological Approaches and Applications – Unit 2 - Conducting Psychological Research – Unit 3 - Health Psychology – Unit 6 - Introduction to Psychopathology research project.
