The next twelve months will see offshore wind lease auctions in three different U.S. bodies of water.
The long-awaited New York Bight auction will take place in late February, where developers will be able to bid on six offshore wind lease areas –t he most areas ever offered in a single auction. This is likely to result in an influx of new market participants, which will have cascading positive effects through the fledgling U.S. offshore wind supply chain.
A LARGE-SCALE COORDINATED APPROACH TO TRANSMISSION
The Biden administration has made grid improvements and modernization a key priority of its approach to climate. Included in this effort is a new study to devel- op transmission solutions to meet the 30 GW by 2030 goal and establishing a pathway to 110 GW by 2050. A significant announcement by the federal government re- garding its approach and/or investment in offshore wind transmission infrastructure would play an influential role in developing greater regional collaboration among the states involved.
SHIFTING TO COMMERCIAL SCALE PROJECTS AND INSIGHTS INTO SUPPLY CHAIN CAPACITY
The first two utility-scale offshore wind projects begin offshore construction in 2022 and 2023. Their con- structions means that the U.S. market will begin to gain significant data points and practical understanding of commercial-scale offshore wind construction and in- stallation in federal waters. This effort will lead to some important insights about logistics coordination and proj- ect execution while complying with U.S. protocols and regulations. It also will provide the first indicators as to whether the capacity of the domestic and global supply chain will be able to manage the volume.
