Art so delicious you could eat it up

Theinsideofthetownhousehomewhere she and husband John Mitchell and their two young children live has the best smell in the world. The smell of an early-morning bakery when the pastry slides out of the ovens. "We're both very passionate about food," said Elaine, with a sweet smile. "We travel for food."

Her passion is fine art and good food. What better way for Elaine Hamelin- Mitchell to enjoy both than by becoming a pastry chef and what better tribute to her successinhernewcareer thananinvitation to one of the most prestigious high-society food events in Ottawa?

She has the most extensive and actual practical background in the culinary art thanks to the years she spent as a teenager working in some of the best bakeries and chocolate shops in Belgium when her family lived abroad. She's taken that experience and together the two of them have created Sweets!, an online gourmet dessert bakery that caters to special events.

That is no joke. They do plan their vaca- tions around to places to sample the local cuisine, and the more unusual and off-the- beaten track the better. "Of the three best things I've ever eaten," said John Mitchell, "two of them have been raw. Now, I'm a guy who likes his steak, but I am getting more adventurous these days." Which is good because in the Sweet! kitchen, John is a professional Information Technology consultant turned "kitchen chemist", experimenting with various tech-

One of the biggest special events for the couple is also the most exclusive culinary social gatherings in Ottawa, the annual Celebrity Chefs of Canada competition. They won't be competing but they have received a special invitation to showcase their new line of "candy sushi" which is a culinary item that is all the rage among the trend-setters of Los Angeles. "We're really proud," said Elaine. "This is a big event for us, and we're also excited to meet some of our role-model chefs." Check out the Sweets! tray at www.sweetcupcakes.ca.
