Improvements next month will include addition of articulated buses on some rou- tes to increase ridership-carrying capacity at certain hours of the day, along with schedule adjustments on other routes to ensure easier transfers for riders on some of the connector routes. There is also a plan to add one morning trip and one afternoon trip extra added to route 130 to improve student travel to and from Gloucester High School and Colonel By High School. Design work on the bridge, which spans the Ottawa River to link Ottawa with Gati- neau in Québec, should be done by the winter of 2013. It will include engineering designs and specifications for structural improvements to the bridge. The federal government will then put the actual construction work out to public bid with the aim of having the work done within a three-year period. The Macdonald-Cartier Bridge in its present design handles on average 70,000 vehicles a day between the two municipal regions.
More buses on some routes and other changes are in the works for next month on public transit service in Cumberland and Orléans. Cumberland Ward Coun. Residents in Ottawa’s Cumberland ward and over in neighbouring Prescott- Russell counties wait for the start of an environmental review to determine how a proposed expansion of their shared highway link. Meanwhile the federal government has approved a major bridge rebuilding contract that will have a future impact on commuter traffic in the region. Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose announced that the joint venture outfit, MMM Group Limited/CIMA+ SENC of Ottawa, won the $1.8 million engineering design contract for structural rehabilitation of the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge.
