MPP declares his support for both official languages
Glengarrywhereeveryone,francophoneandanglophone,dobusinesstogether,volunteer together, play together and work together. We laugh together, we cry together and we develop friendships that often lead to marriage. I recognized early on the importance of being able to communicate in both official languages and as such both my children attended francophone schools and are completely bilingual. I believed and still believe that being able to communicate and do business in both English and French was an important part of their education. I continue to work on my French language skills on a daily basis. It’s hard work but rewarding. Being able to communicate in both official languages is something I consider to be an asset both professionally and personally It’s important that we all move forward…together to build and live in stronger communities in Eastern Ontario. Language is part of culture, culture is part of people and people are the cells of our vibrant communities. Respectful communication will always be key in the success of our relationships and our communities and that is what I will continue to value and uphold.
I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts and position on a very important issue that has been raised recently, here in Eastern Ontario. Bilingualism. Bilingualism is something that I believe defines us as a region, something that creates opportunities and something that I and many others respect but obviously took for granted. I am disheartened and surprised that the conversation about providing services in both official languages in our region has been brought to light once again. At a time when we should be building upon our successes and gains of the past, at a time when we should be celebrating and promoting our two cultures, at a time when we should be respecting our individual rights as Canadians, as Ontarians, we are once again faced with the challenge of justifying who we are. In Ontario, the French Language Services Act was enacted over 25 years ago. It was supported unanimously by all parties represented in the Ontario Legislative Assembly in 1986. This Act was important as Ontario recognized in law, that the French language “is an historic and honoured language in Ontario”. I support it 100 per cent. I was brought up in and currently live in a bilingual community, Alexandria, in North J’aimerais par la présente partager mes sentiments et mes réflexions sur un sujet qui fait plusieurs manchettes dernièrement dans l’est ontarien, le bilinguisme. Le bilinguisme pour moi est une source d’identité régionale, un potentiel d’opportu- nités et une connexion puissante qui inspire toujours le respect. Je suis attristé et franchement surpris que la discussion sur la nécessité d’offrir des services dans nos deux langues officielles dans notre région, soit reprise. Au moment où nous devrions construire à partir de nos succès et de nos réussites antérieures, au moment où nous devrions célébrer et promouvoir nos deux cultures, au moment où nous devrions vivre dans le respect de chacun et de nos droits individuels en tant que Canadien(ne), Ontarien(ne), nous sommes encore à nous définir et à nous justifier. La loi sur les services en français a été adoptée et mise en vigueur il y a plus de vingt- cinq ans. Elle a été acceptée par tous les partis à l’Assemblée législative de l’Ontario en 1986. Cette loi marquante reconnaît que la langue française est une *langue historique et honorée en Ontario*. Je peux vous assurer que j’appuie cette loi à cent pour cent. J’ai grandi et je vis dans une communauté bilingue à Alexandria, située dans la municipalité de Glengarry Nord. Ici tous les résidents francophones et anglophones font Lettre ouverte

affaire ensemble, sont bénévoles ensemble, jouent et travaillent ensemble. Nous rions, pleurons, partageons ensemble et nous développons des amitiés qui se transforment souvent en mariages. Mes deux enfants ont fait leurs études dans nos écoles francophones car j’ai toujours cru et je crois encore que pouvoir communiquer et faire affaire en français et en anglais, était une partie fondamentale de leur éducation. Ils sont parfaitement bilingues. Je continue à travailler à améliorer ma communication verbale en français et je peux vous avouer que même si ce n’est pas toujours facile, c’est énormément gratifiant! Être capable d’échanger dans les deux langues officielles est une capacité que j’estime être un atout tant professionnel que personnel. Il est essentiel d’avancer…ensemble pour construire et vivre dans des communautés fortes et vibrantes ici dans l’est de l’Ontario. La langue fait partie de la culture, la culture fait partie des gens et les gens sont les cellules de nos communautés. La communication dans le respect sera toujours la clé du succès de nos relations et de nos communautés. J’aurai toujours la conviction de la protéger et de la mettre en pratique.
