JANUARY 2023 SUSIE MARTIN, EDITOR
Day Tripping…… By: Susie Martin
Recently, the Mohave Daily News included a magazine in their newspaper packet about “48” things to see and do in our area. Why 48 you might ask, well because Arizona became the 48 th state of the union in 1912. While some of those 48 things included entertainment that we see and do on a daily basis, some were more unusual and not so much in our area. So, I thought I would highlight my “Top 10 Day Trips” (in no particular order) leaving from Bullhead City: Alpacas of the Southwest…Although originating in the mountains of South America, alpacas happen to adapt just fine to the Hualapai Mountain foothills in Kingman. There, a herd of about 40 thrives on a six-acre ranch called Alpacas of the Southwest. The ranch is right off Interstate 40 at 1108 McCarrel Road and the tours are open Monday-Friday 10 am-3:30 pm. There is a $15.00 entry fee per car. Bearizona….The resident black bears are the main attraction at this park. Bearizona is located in Williams, Arizona. This is a self guided driving loop with the wildlife roaming free. The park is open daily from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm and is located at 1500 East Route 66 just off the Interstate 40. Admission for adults is $30.00 on weekdays and $35.00 on weekends. Children ages 4-12 is $20.00/$25.00. Children 3 and under are free. Desert Wonder Tours…..”It’s not the trip, it’s the experience” says Bob Walton of Desert Wonder Tours. Bob will customize each tour to fit your schedule and needs. Bob has taken travelers to places like a Western Guest Ranch, Mining towns, vineyards, underground caverns or even the Grand Canyon. Book online at desertwonder-tours.com or call 928-716-2046. Let Bob do the driving…… Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours…One of the oldest and richest gold mines in Nevada lies less than 80 miles north of Laughlin in Eldorado Canyon. This mine would be the famous Techatticup Mine. Although mining has ceased, the mine is open for tours. This is a family company and they live on site. The mine lies about 2 miles past the town of Nelson off Highway 95 North. The best part is that the road is paved all the way to the mine. Tours run daily at 9:00 am, 12 noon and 2 pm, but must have 4 or more people to begin a tour. The tour cost $15.00 for adults 13 and older, $10.00 for kids ages 5-12 and kids under 5 are free. For reservations call 702-291-0026. Route 66 to Seligman…The longest unbroken original stretch of the Mother Road (Route 66) stretches from Kingman to Seligman, Arizona. On a personal note, Ron and I along with Bill and Barb Demulling took this drive on Christmas Day. It was most enjoyable, with several stops along the way. Hackberry, Arizona has a general store open daily that is worth a stop to see the double decker wood stove. Truxton, Arizona would be your next stop to see the Route 66 Skeleton Driver at the Gas N Grab. Do not miss the “Burma Cream” red signs along the way for a silly laugh. Then Seligman, Arizona is your final stop. While most of the town was closed for Christmas, I am told you must stop at the Snow Cap Drive-In, which will have a

familiar look to the ceilings. You then have to make a choice, come home on Interstate 40 or turn around and enjoy the nostalgia of the Mother Road once again. Grand Canyon Caverns…While on the Mother Road, you might want to stop at the “step sister of our famous Grand Canyon” in Peach Springs, Arizona. This is the largest “dry” caverns in the United States. This tour lasts about 45 minutes and is a walking tour. There are a few different tour options to suit your needs. Hours are 9:30 am – 6:00 pm. There is also the Caverns Restaurant where you can get lunch or dinner. They have the Cave Motel Room if you dare. Deep, dark and eerily quiet, this suite is an experience you simply cannot find anywhere else. If this room is not for you there is a motel, the ranch house (for larger families) and a 48 site RV campground. Keepers of the Wild….The Mother Road also offers Keepers of the Wild. This sanctuary provides a forever home for a number of abandoned or abused animals. With 175 acres, it homes around 150 animals. Keepers of the Wild offers walking tours as well as guided tours with a ride on a safari vehicle. The park is open 9:00am-5pm, Wednesday thru Monday. Prices vary depending on your tour preferences. Keepers of the Wild is located at 13441 E. Highway 66 in Valentine, Arizona. Website at keepersofthewild.org. Willow Beach….Willow Beach is a quick trip up highway 93 from the Tri -state area. There is a $25.00 entrance fee per vehicle which is good for one week. Willow Beach is the perfect hub to the canyon, with watercraft rentals tours and a campground. Here the Colorado River flows fairly smooth, with a number of coves, beaches and scenic spots to explore. Check out their website at willowbeachharbor.com. Rail Explorers…..Ride the rails for a unique adventure in Boulder City, Nevada. Rail Explorers is open year-round to bring you a new viewpoint of the Southwest from an open cart along the train tracks. You will board a light-weight pedal cart that runs along the railroad tracks with no steering necessary. You operate the cart completely on your own by pedaling and the use of a hand brake. The carts seat either two or four guests, but can be hooked together for larger groups. Don’t worry, guides will ride in a cart in front and behind you to ensure safety, but are not connected to your cart(s). For more information go to their website at www.railexplorers.net. I could not only pick 10, so here is a list of some of the other Day Tripping ideas from the very interesting magazine. I am sure goggle will give you all the information you need to visit these places……Grand Canyon Deer Farm, Grand Canyon West, Havasu Balloon Fest, Hoover Dam, Hualapai Mountain Park, London Jet Boat Tour, Long Gone Escapes, Mohave Comedy, Needles El Garces House, Pirate Cove, Red Rock Canyon, Topock 66, Valley of Fire, and Valle Vista Vineyards.
I hope you have many great Day Trips and that this article gives you some great ideas for when you have family visiting or just want to take a trip.

Meet your New Neighbors………. By: Susie Martin
Carol Eifler
Carol recently purchased 3316 Santana Loop. A side note on this property…everyone here knows this location as “The house that Greg and Nancy Walters were going to buy”. Well, now it is Carol’s house.
Carol is a native of San Diego County, California in the city of Ramona. Carol lived there for 33 years before moving here to Vista Del Sol.
Carol is the Mother of a set of wonderful twin girls (Erika and Elysia) who both live in San Diego near the beach. Carol said she gained 100 pounds while carrying these girls, who each weighed in at just under 7 pounds each. She stated she continued to walk (waddled) ½ mile every day, even though she could not find her feet. Carol has a beautiful blue-eyed blonde 3 year old granddaughter named Rylie who is a leap year baby born on February 29. Carol is ready to welcome a new grandson (Rylie’s brother) in May. Carol says she inherited a 12 year old Queensland Healer named Neesa. It appears Neesa loves the dog park, but mostly loves meeting all of the 2 and 4 legged friends there. Carol says she has a 14 year old Calico cat named Lily who does not plan on ever going to the dog park! Carol has stated that she got her general contractors licenses in 1986 mostly doing concrete and masonry work before retiring. Carol has a passion for growing plants, is looking forward to exploring a different environment and is interested in talking to anyone about plant growing challenges and successes.
Welcome Carol, Neesa and Lily to Vista Del Sol…….

Card Bingo at Vista Del Sol
Every other Wednesday night here at VDS you can play “Card Bingo” in the Clubhouse at 6:30. This event is usually over at 9:00 PM. All you need to bring is a $10.00 prize for the prize table. Some months there is a theme to the prizes.
There are 3-4 players at each table and they are dealt 13 cards from a deck of 52 cards.
The caller…..(this is Larry Kuhn during the prime season and usually Greg Walters or Trudy during the summer months) shuffles the over sized deck of cards and randomly pulls the cards from the shuffled pile. If one of your cards are called you discard it into the middle of your table. Object…Be the first person to discard all of your 13 cards into the middle of your table. You yell “Bingo” and get to select a prize from the prize table unless you want to steal a gift someone else has (similar to the white elephant game played during the holidays). However, here at VDS Card Bingo the prizes can only be stolen once. There can be as many as 3 winners per game. Larry has stated that there are A LOT of different types of Bingo games they play. For example, sometimes you pass cards, sometimes you throw different cards in before you start the game. Larry said it is a very fast pace and they may get in as many as 20 bingo games in the 2 ½ hours there.
There is no sign up sheet, just show up with your favorite beverage (a snack if you would like) and a prize for the table.
Any questions, you can talk to Larry Kuhn, as he has told me “Yes, I am in complete control of all things concerning card bingo!”

Off Road Group news….. By: Keith Wheeler
This last month was awesome.
We added a few more people and their machines to the group but lost a couple in return. That ’ s the way things go as people transit in and out of our RV resort. Rest assured we will continue going out and bringing the fun each week. Rain brought some green to the desert this month and with that some mud to enjoy. A few in the group were able to splash a little on themselves. The great thing about going out twice weekly is we keep finding new trails, and re - visit some favorite ones too. Some of these trails have us scouting ahead of the group in order to determine if the machines can fit through the rocks and tight spots along the way. The answer, “ If you don ’ t go, you won ’ t know ” seems to be Gary Phillip ’ s motto. So, we generally follow that rule of thumb and are often surprised as to what we find.
If you haven ’ t gone with the group, you ’ re missing out on the beauty of the surrounding desert, the wildlife, canyons and the camaraderie that is shared by all. Come join us!!!!
Holding your breath and

CRAFT ROOM NEWS…………….By: Susie Martin
Our new class looks like it has gone over very well. DJ Camille is the instructor of the Glass Mosaic Class. She tells me that you work on your project during class and then there are a few steps she has to do to complete the project. Looks like fun from the pictures.
Wire Wrapping class on January 12 was wrapping mini utensils, mix or match. Pictures show that the class was full and everyone enjoyed their time in the craft room. February 9 th , 2023 class will be a very special class, we are having a guest instructor (Dagmar) and she will be instructing us on how to make Suncatchers. They will be $15.00 each or 2 for $25.00. Samples are in the office along with a signup sheet. Dagmar will provide everything you need and she has stated that it will most likely take about 40 minutes to do one suncatcher.
Glass Fusion classes were back in swing in January. Jacque helped the ladies create some beautiful items. As always Glass Fusion classes are limited in space and if you are interested, you need to get your name on the waiting list. Signup sheets are in the office and the waiting list is there also. See Trudy or Jacque for information on which next class has openings.
Melody Green’s painting classes are finally under way. She had three classes in early January and plans more in February. Melody has such a flare for ideas, she always comes up with such fun things to do each month. Melody’s classes will be February 6 th and 14 th , sign up sheets and samples are always in the office.

Rock Painting has become popular again here at VDS. Karen Talbot is our instructor and she provides everything you need plus 2 rocks for a $5.00 fee. In December we did Christmas themed rocks. January class (which will not be until after print time) will be a combined “open painting” class and the first “Pet Memorial” rock class. Hoping we will have photos for next newsletter. You can take your rocks home to add to your own garden or you can talk to Karen about hiding your rock under the “Arizona Rocks” guidelines. Check the signup sheets. This class is always the third Thursday of the month.
Looking forward to new activites……
Patti Schneider is having a hard time getting to VDS this year. However, when she does arrive she plans on Introducing everyone to a nationwide program called “I found a quilted Heart”. If you want to know about this program Google it or there is a Facebook page on it also. She has sent me samples to show and pass out. I have the samples if anyone wants to start the program. This class is now scheduled for the 5 th of February. DJ Camile is not offering the Mosaic class in February, however she is going to offer a class called “Arctic Flow Painting” on February 21st. I do not know much about this class, but assume there will be samples in the office along with the signup sheet.
One last thing, we are always looking for instructors. So if you have a craft and you would like to share it with your neighbors, please get with Trudy in the office and set up an available date to teach your craft.
Happy Crafting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Giving Beyond our Gate
By: Kathy Wheeler
January 2023
We have continued our collection of hygiene items, instant/easy meals and snacks for our teens in need program . I along with Jacque Donofrio and Sindie Harman had the opportunity to take our collected items down to Elizabeth at Mohave High School. We met with Elizabeth Lara for quite some time as she shared some very sincere feelings of her purpose there and explaining more about the program. She assists approximately 50 teens from 3 High Schools with almost any need they may have for daily living. She runs a great and very organized program as the family liaison. These teens have come to trust her and show gratefulness for all she does for them. It was a good experience to be able to see her in the environment of giving and kindness she has developed in our community for these youth. We all came away feeling humbled and dedicated to assisting Elizabeth, personally and through our community here at Vista Del Sol in the future.
The collection bins will be in the office here at Vista through the end January for more collection of goods.
Photos are from the visit to Elizabeth’s office. Items used to assist the local students.
February 2023
Looking ahead into February, we are holding a fundraising event here at Vista Del Sol for the Mohave County Sheriff's K-9 Foundation. It will be in conjunction with a Car Show for your enjoyment. This event will be held on Sunday February 26th. There are flyers with more information concerning this event in the mailroom, clubhouse and office.
As always, thank you all for your contributions and kind hearts of giving.

Featured VDS Neighbors for January 2023… By: Susie Martin
I did not realize when I asked these two couples if they would be interested in being the Featured neighbors that they had so much in common. So please meet the “Jim’s and their sole mate sweethearts”…………..
Jim and Karen Dechant
The Dechant’s live at 3314 Santana Loop (right in the middle of all the new home builds).
Their wedding anniversary is July 23 and they were married in the year 1966, which means they will be married 57 years this July. Congrats to you both!
Jim and Karen are both from Westminster, Colorado and they both attended the North High School in Denver, Colorado. Jim says they were “high school sweethearts”. Karen said she was the one that asked him out, not the other way around. These high school sweethearts have two daughters whom both are school teachers, these two daughters gave Karen and Jim 5 grandsons who love coming to the desert in the winter for a visit.
Jim and Karen started spending winters here at Vista Del Sol 6 years ago and decided they liked it so much that they purchased their full time residence in 2020.
Prior to coming to Vista Del Sol, Jim and Karen built a 1936 Ford truck into a real nice hot rod. They traveled the country for 16 years showing their truck at lots of car shows and won many awards. They made lots of great memories while showing their hot rod and they said they had lots of fun doing it. Karen has a couple of scrap books of their life with “The Sweet 36” that they would proudly show anyone. Jim and Karen sold their hot rod in 2016, but Jim said recently his grand- son was going thru a magazine that lists antique cars for sale and said there was their Hot Rod for sale. So he said “The Sweet 36 is still out there!”
Karen said she enjoys the wire wrapping classes in the craft room and you will most likely find Jim in the fitness room or on the pickleball courts.
So glad you two high school sweethearts decided to settle here at VDS.

Jim and Sue Wilkinson
Jim and Sue live at 2334 San Lin Con Lane (Behind the Laundry Room/Shower House). Jim and Sue were married on November 28, 1964. Folks they just celebrated 58 years together. My oh my!!!!!! That in its self is an accomplishment…Congrats to you both.
They have lived at Vista Del Sol since 2020, they purchased their lot and built an “Art” studio on the lot for Sue’s passion of drawing in Pastels.
I think everyone knows Jim and Sue’s pup, Cooper. Cooper loves to walk the neighborhood trying to find a new smell that might interest him. Cooper is a pug breed and is 4 years old.
Jim and Sue were both born in Michigan and married there in 1964. They met at Club Cliché, a University of Detroit hangout. They have lived in Michigan, Florida, Texas and now Arizona.
Jim and Sue have two daughters. Oldest daughter, Laura and her husband Eric live in Rochester, New York and have two children. Jim and Sue’s Rochester grandchildren are Emily, 19 and Ian, 16. Youngest daughter, Michelle and her husband Bret live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Jim and Sue’s other granddaughter, Ann who is 8. The Wilkinson’s have been retired for 25 years and have visited 633 RV Parks with some 366 being unique. Jim says he compiled this information from their “Captain’s Log”. As I mentioned above Sue is an Artist while Jim just likes tinkering and playing with his beloved computers.
Sue retired from Nursing and Jim from Software Engineering (Testing).
You might see Jim, Sue and Cooper riding around in their newly purchased Golf Cart or at the dog park, Cooper’s favorite place to be.
Vista Del Sol is honored that you both are our neighbors….

FINAL THOUGHTS
By: Susie Martin
I already have several interesting articles lined up for our future newsletter “front page”. Stay tuned to see if anything will interest you. Again, if anyone has anything they want me to highlight, please let me know. Ron and I moved to VDS in November 2019 and we have not experienced this much rain and clouds since we have arrived. Ron says maybe we should head south for the winter!!!!! I miss our beautiful sunshine and warm days. Let’s hope Mother Nature has some of those days planned for the near future.
May the year 2023 be good to you all.
NOTES FROM THE OFFICE:
By: Linda Huber
Yes, another year under our belts, wishing everyone great things in 2023. Looking forward to whatever may come our way, hopefully no big challenges and we all have smooth sailing throughout the year.
We really would like to see more of you at “Let’s Talk About It”. We now have a suggestion box in the clubhouse so if you are shy and want to give an opinion or suggestion you can do so anonymously. Just remember my door is open to you anytime I will never be too busy to stop and talk to you.
Sorry to our out of state visitors but we “Love A Rainy Day”. We’ve had more than usual this year and I feel like we actually have a winter.
I have not heard any updates when the new sites for RV park will start construction as soon as I know you will know.
The Horseshoe pit is finished, would love to see you out there pitching for a ringer.
I want to ask you, if you haven’t seen or heard from a neighbor in awhile, go check on them, they may need help. They may just need a visitor or need a home cooked meal. We need to watch out for our follow residents and neighbors. Thank you
