A NOTE FROM SYLVIA With the balmy winter we have enjoyed this year, will March bring an early spring to Minnesota? Or will March live up to its reputation as the snowiest month of the year? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: This month brings a new line-up of pledge programming to TPT 2, including a marathon of fan-favorite All Creatures Great & Small on Sunday, March 10. The support of members like you – as well as the new ones who will join your ranks during our spring pledge drive – help to ensure that public media remains a free service to everyone in the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. March also marks our celebration of Women’s History Month, when we honor the contributions of women trailblazers who have shaped our past and present, as well as the ones who will influence the future. Originally produced by TPT for American Masters , we will broadcast Laura Ingalls Wilder: From Prairie to Page on Tuesday, March 12 at 8 p.m. Airing under our local Minnesota Experience history series, the film sheds light on the enduring legacy of one of Minnesota’s most famous writers. On Sunday, March 17 at 7 p.m., we premiere season 13 of Call the Midwife , which is sure to light up your weekend evenings. You can find more shows to celebrate Women’s History Month at tpt.org/womenshistory . Also premiering this month is a new Minnesota Experience film about the life and legacy of Ojibwe hockey legend Henry Boucha, a onetime NHL star and Olympian. THE SAINT PAUL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA In a 13-episode season, TPT broadcast concerts from one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world – The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. This past season included Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, Piano Quartets with Stewart Goodyear, Where’s My Refuge with cellist Abel Selacoe, and more.

Political Reporter Mary Lahammer Opens a Behind-the-Scenes Door to the Making of Jesse Ventura Shocks the World!
What was it like from your perspective to be an early career female reporter in 1998, when many of your fellow reporters were likely men? It was really a male-dominated field and actually I think it helped me with Ventura because it made me different. He also came to respect that I was plenty feisty and that you weren't going to push me around.
Twin Cities PBS political reporter Mary Lahammer was an early-career journalist when Jesse Ventura made international headlines with his seemingly overnight transformation from pro wrestler to Minnesota governor. During his time in office and beyond, she developed a level of trust with Ventura that led to decades of filmed interviews – and those interviews are the foundation for a new TPT film, Jesse Ventura Shocks the World! , that takes viewers on a rollicking journey to better understand his political impact today.
Why is the Jesse Ventura story important to you?
I guess it's important to me because it's my life's work. I started this job in ‘98 when he filed for office. It's literally one of the first stories I covered and then to have this international news story just explode and drop in my lap as a new young reporter was an amazing opportunity.
Why do you feel his story is relevant today?
The latest polling shows that it's a record all- time high for independent party identification in the country right now, or more than 40% of Americans are identifying as independents – and he was an independent candidate. Party identification for Democrats and Republicans is down to 20 some percent. So I feel like that statistically is the best justification.

Who are some of the women reporters you admire most?
Betty Wilson was one of the first reporters to cover the Capitol. I grew up with her because I grew up in the press corps, chasing my dad and all his colleagues around. Betty would tell stories about politicians who would refuse to acknowledge her presence, would constantly comment on her wardrobe and say things like, “I only talk to people who wear pants.”
Is there a comment or reaction to the documentary that has touched you the most?
I would say the one I got from Bill Hillsman, the creator of those [Ventura campaign] commercials. [He said], “You got it right, you're creating the record, and history is going to be correct on this one because this will be the ultimate kind of historic marker for what his time in office really was.”

Riding off With a Legacy By Kate St. Vincent Vogl
When I met Linda Back McKay through the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, I was new to writing, and she had several books published. Yet she asked about my manuscript. Connected me with her publisher. Many times in many ways she guided me through the years. We celebrated her wins, too, like when she got the book contract of her dreams. Given the chance to work with the personal photos of the woman who founded the first stand-alone women-only motorcycle association, she said yes. Turned out the founder of the Women’s International Motorcycle Association (WIMA) also encouraged her followers to say yes to motorcycle riding and the thrill of independence. No other woman in Rochester rode solo when Louise Scherbyn first wheeled her Scout onto the gravel of Maiden Lane during the Depression. When Linda found out she had brain cancer, I did what felt right. She needed guidance developing Scherbyn's narrative, something she'd never needed before. And in the fall of 2019, from her hospice bed, my friend handed over her whole manuscript.
Many photos we'd had to pull; the women's names and meeting places weren't identified, as the publisher required. Without matching up why and where these motorcycling pioneers had traveled, we didn't have a story. Neither museum housing Scherbyn's cycles and papers held the answers. Linda had gone looking between treatments. On the way to Waterloo, she'd met up with a woman who'd recognized her mother in a photo Linda posted on Facebook. The mom had been one of the kids looking up to Scherbyn at a rally. Scherbyn had once belonged to the same motorcycle club auxiliary as the older women in the family, so the daughter brought Linda to the Newark clubhouse. A 1939 photo of Scherbyn hung on the wall.

It was clear this story about women breaking barriers was bigger than either of us. I promised to see it through. That spring I sorted out what we had and what we needed, scrolling through hundreds of black and whites from Scherbyn's extensive collection.

Ballet Is for All Bodies: No Tutus Required By Lindsay Martell
"I love it," says Sonia Alvarez Wilson, 66, a retired schoolteacher and a longtime ballet enthusiast.
"It is a lifelong sport," she says, explaining how she's taken ballet class sporadically since she was a kid. But doing it as an adult has become a next- level passion for Wilson, who credits dance with helping to ease her joint pain. "I get achy joints when I don't dance," she says. While donning a pair of ballet slippers and taking a spot at the barre may traditionally be considered something just for younger people to pursue, adults can benefit from it in ways that might surprise you. Ballet is both a cardiovascular and a weight- bearing exercise. Instead of dumbbells or weight machines, your body is used as resistance when doing stationary exercises like arabesques and pliés.
Ballet is for anyone who wants to give it a go, whether you took classes as a kid and are just now returning to it as an adult or if you're a newbie. "Somebody new to ballet is going to get a good workout no matter what because it's hard and they're unlikely to be trying to strive for something other than just trying to learn the steps and get a workout," Cotton says. Dance also helps to "develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition." In a 2020 study, researchers found that female recreational ballet dancers report feeling ballet "can foster both a positive social identity and affect that engenders efficacy in managing successful aging."

The shift to cardio comes later in the class when dancers move to the center for jumping and leaping across the floor. Kester Cotton, a physical therapist in Wellesley, Massachusetts, says ballet is excellent for sustaining bone health, which is an important issue for women in particular, especially as they reach menopause and lose bone mass and density. According to the National Institute on Aging, osteoporosis affects about one in five women over the age of fifty. "Ballet is great for strength, through the hips and the core," Cotton says.
