2 WORDS THAT WARM MY HEART Especially During National PT Month!

These days, there’s a month for just about everything. A quick Google search told me October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, National Bat Appreciation Month, National Italian-American Heritage Month, and National Spinach Lovers Month — plus about 50 more! But it’s also National Physical Therapy Month. That may not be as exciting as bats or spinach, but it’s a little more relevant to my life. Some physical therapists I know throw parties to celebrate National PT Month, but we’ve always been a little more low-key here at our office. The goal of the month is to celebrate PTs and everything we do for our patients, and we’re lucky enough to feel celebrated all year long. You can probably guess why. Every time we walk into the office, we’re surrounded by framed photos of happy patients!

Hearing those two magic words motivates our therapists to keep

working and helping. Sometimes when I’m feeling down, I take a minute to just walk around the office and read the framed messages. They always cheer me up. What I’m trying to say is that thanks to you, every month is National PT Month at Kinetic Physical Therapy Specialists. Thank you for your kind words over the years, and thank you for sending your friends, family members, and coworkers to us for help. That’s the biggest compliment you can give us! We may not be celebrating National PT Month with a party, but we’ll definitely be having fun. We do that year-round with events like our “Festive Fridays” — dress-up days where our whole

Years ago, Emilie and I decided to start taking “graduation pictures” every time someone finished their treatment with us. Every graduate also writes a little note for their PT and our team. Then, we hang the note and photo on the wall. These notes are really nice — we have the best patients! They almost always include two words that warm my

team wears Hawaiian shirts, sparkles, sports gear, or ugly sweaters. If you ever came in for an appointment and were confused by everyone wearing Hawaiian shirts … well, that’s what was happening. (I am NOT in charge of this stuff. They just tell me what to wear and I show up with it on!)

heart: “Thank you.” If you walked around the office and read them all you’d see the same sentiment over and over: “Thank you for helping me get my life back.” That’s a pretty simple sentence, but it means a lot to our team of perfectionists. It’s easy to focus on the one or two patients who are struggling (there are always a couple) instead of the dozens who are healing and happy. When we get a thank-you note, we make sure to read it in our Monday staff meeting.

is, I have to shout out our PTs Emilie, Emery, Amanda, and Mandi for their hard work. They are all exceptional therapists who really care about their patients and do a wonderful job helping them recover — in October, and every other month of the year.

Thanks, guys!

HUNGRY FOR HEALTH

The Shift Toward Plant-Based Eating

The appetite for plant-based foods isn’t slowing down — in fact, it’s rising. According to a 2021 Bloomberg report, by 2030, the plant-based food industry is projected to hit $162 billion! Eating plant-based means finding food sources that originate mainly from plants, inherently focusing on fresh produce, whole grains, beans, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Let’s explore the benefits of eating plant-based! PLANT-BASED KEEPS YOUR HEART HEALTHY. According to studies posted in the Journal of the American Heart Association, consuming a diet high in plant-based foods may lower the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease. Meat contains saturated fat, which studies show increases the risk of heart problems. But, it’s also important to make sure that your plant-based choices are heart friendly too! Load up on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes and avoid refined grains, fatty foods, and sugary beverages! PLANT-BASED LOWERS YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE. Plant-based diets are linked to lower blood pressure, which greatly reduces the risk for strokes, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes. The risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure, increases in people who consume large amounts of animal

products such as meat and dairy. Even just limiting the amount of meat and dairy in your diet is proven to make a difference! PLANT-BASED MAY REDUCE

YOUR RISK OF CANCER. The nutrients present in

plant-based foods reduce the risk of getting several types of cancer. Plant-based foods contain

phytochemicals, which shield the cells in your body from damage and have awesome anti-inflammatory properties. So, load up on those legumes, whole grains, fruits, and veggies — your body will thank you! PLANT-BASED CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. Typically, plant-based foods are lower in calorie density than meats and other animal products, thus, you can fill up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains without the same calorie burden you may experience from other sources of food. With all of the health-based advantages of shifting toward a plant-based diet, more people are catching on and making the switch or reducing their meat intake. What’s on your plate?

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS Getting Confidence Back

“The entire staff (Physical Therapists and Office Personnel) at Kinetic Physical Therapy are knowledgeable, attentive and personable. I was unwilling to climb stairs due to knee pain and balance issues. I gave up traveling more than an hour, hiking and

“PT was truly an amazing experience and a tremendous help when I came to Kinetic the first time. I was unable to get in or out of my bed. My back was so painful and I had to sleep in a recliner all night. All pain in my back is now gone and I feel very good all the time. Thank you, Mike and staff, for all your help.”

HAVE A FRIEND WHO’S AFRAID OF PT? SHARE THIS TO EASE THEIR MIND

Have you ever asked a friend or family member if they’ve thought about doing physical therapy and gotten a bad reaction from them? You’re not the only one! A lot of people are actually scared to see a physical therapist, just like they’re scared of the dentist. Usually this is because they have misconceptions about what PT will really be like. The best thing you can do if you’re stuck in a conversation with someone scared of PT is explain what the experience in our office was like for you. That will show them the truth! You can also keep reading to check out two of the most common fears and worries we hear from patients — and the things we say to help them feel better. 1. ‘I CAN’T DO PT — IT WILL HURT TOO MUCH!’ There’s a crazy myth out there that PT is really painful. We’ve even heard jokes that PT stands for “physical torture,” not “physical therapy!” That couldn’t be farther from the truth. You may feel a little bit of discomfort during a PT session while we work to restore your balance or range of motion, but you should NEVER feel like

screaming or crying during PT. If anything, the “pain” feels good — like stretching

a sore muscle when you’ve been cramped up for too long. If your friend or family member had a bad experience somewhere else, reassure them that our therapists would never hurt them.

2. ‘I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO WEAR; I’LL JUST END UP EMBARRASSING MYSELF.’ No one likes showing up somewhere under or overdressed — but that worry shouldn’t hold you back! Your friend or family member can always call the clinic with dress code questions, but a good rule of thumb is to wear loose-fitting clothing you can exercise in. Next time someone shares one of these fears, feel free to steal our comebacks! Hopefully you’ll be able to assuage their fears and convince them to call our office or visit our website to schedule an appointment.
