New Power Center Model A Hit With Over-The-Road Drivers
Our Power Centers are a great resource for our over-the-road drivers, giving them access to safe parking and creating more career opportunities in places we may not otherwise have a facility. We currently have 22 Power Centers throughout our network, and we recently opened a new one in Bessemer, AL. That facility has proved to be a big hit with our driving force. Much like our Driver Support Centers that are attached to LTL
facilities, this 2,000-square-foot stand-alone building features bathrooms, vending and ice machines, showers, a lounge with a TV and recliners, and a microwave and full-size refrigerator. Additionally, it will soon have Wi-Fi access and rocking chairs for the covered front porch. “The drivers love it,” says Driver Support Specialist GLENN SONNIER , who drove for our team for 11 years and
GLENN SONNIER was a member of our Driver Advisory Council before moving into his current role. “They can take their 34-hour break or their 10-hour break. We have all the amenities they need. The drivers really appreciate it, they’re taking care of it, and they take pride in it.” Director of Driver Services DAVID BROYLES adds that the location and security are big pluses. “It’s quiet, and you need a code to get in and out,” DAVID BROYLES David explains. “It’s less than a mile from the interstate, and there is ample parking in the yard. So they can get on and off the interstate, or if they’re spending the night, they don’t have to waste any time on their clock.” David says he’s been asked whether there will be more facilities like Bessemer

in the future. “We think that’s going to be a pattern for us,” David says. “We’re going to use Bessemer as the model moving forward when we’re building other locations, remodeling or expanding to put places in where drivers can park overnight because it is such a great model.” To see a full list of Power Centers and Driver Support Centers, check out our Quick Reference Guide or visit InsideAveritt.com/Facilities . A WHOLE NEW OPPORTUNITY OTL Drivers Take Different Paths To This Unique Team On Tour Logistics serves the concert tour and events industry, and it’s a team that has seen exceptional growth since it began in 2012. Lexington’s JIM MITCHELL and Waco’s ALEX RODARTE each found their way to OTL through different paths, and they’ve both enjoyed the experience. Jim originally came to Averitt almost 20 years ago, starting in Truckload, serving as a driver-trainer and then moving to shuttle and team shuttle. For a time, he decided to leave Averitt and operate his own truck. But he wanted to come back, and his return interview reminded him why he enjoyed being part of our team. “I was sitting in the office and looked across and said, 'I know that guy!' Jim recalls. “It was JIMMY HOSKINS (who now serves as our Louisville operations manager). We had worked at Lexington, and he used to load my truck when he worked on the dock. Most of the people I had worked with before were still there. It was like nobody left. Everything was familiar.” Jim eventually decided he wanted to try something new, so he joined On Tour Logistics. His first tour was contemporary Christian music artists Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham. Following that stint, he joined the All Elite Wrestling tour, and he’s loved the atmosphere.
worked in several roles for a manufactured home company and wanted to make a career change, so he joined us as a part-time dock associate. From there, Alex took advantage of our Dock-To-Driver Training Program and worked as a CDL-A qualified dock associate for about six months. Alex then researched On Tour Logistics and decided to join the team. He’s been part of the All Elite Wrestling tour for a little more than six months. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to try something new and a little different and make a good living,” Alex explains. “That’s how it all started for me.” As a husband and a father of a young son, Alex does his best to create family time while on the road. “I FaceTime them all the time,” he says. “We were in Texas not too long ago, and they drove to Dallas and spent time with me there. That was really nice.” In the meantime, Alex is enjoying the OTL experience and is thankful for the career opportunity. “I didn’t want to leave Averitt,” he explains. “I realized it was a great company early on, with the opportunities that are available and the family atmosphere. I didn’t want to have to go anywhere else. I was honest with (OTL leader) JENNIFER COBB in that I don’t see myself doing this for the next 10 years. But I did commit to her and said, ‘I can promise you anything from two to three years, and we can reevaluate things in a couple of years.' T m Waco associate ALEX RODARTE took a unique path to our On Tour Logistics team. He came to Averitt as a dock associate, completed our Dock-To-Driver Training Program, and after about six months as a CDL-A qualified dock associate, he moved to OTL.
“It’s a whole new opportunity,” he says. “It’s still driving. You’re still picking up freight and delivering freight. But with AEW, the 14 people on our crew basically became like brothers and sisters to me. We were friends, we worked together, we’d go out to
JIM MITCHELL
dinner and we’d go sightseeing. It was a lot more fun for me.” Following the end of that tour, Jim is working in Truckload as he awaits his next assignment. Wherever that takes him, it’s something he eagerly awaits. “I’m happier than I’ve ever been driving a truck,” Jim says. FROM THE DOCK TO THE DRIVER’S SEAT Alex, meanwhile, took a completely different path to Averitt. He previously

A HOT WHEELS HELPING HAND
Region 2 Collects 23,000+ Hot Wheels For St. Jude What started as an idea to help children in need has turned into an ongoing Region 2 Team Up Community Challenge effort that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Last year, associates from our Kentucky, Arkansas and Oklahoma teams combined to collect more than 23,000 Hot Wheels cars that were donated to St. Jude. The event was such a success that Region 2 customers got involved, with associates outside the region also pitching in. “The idea started several years ago,” recalls Region 2 Vice President MIKE MONIN. “When we did the St. Jude check donation, (Louisville operations manager) JIMMY HOSKINS was one of the people representing our region. He came back with an idea that when we do Team Up events, let’s team up for St. Jude. DUSTY BARROW and ALICE CRABTREE of our corporate team helped determine what St. Jude had the greatest need for. In 2022 it was Play-Doh, and we got customers involved with that. The next thing they said was Hot Wheels, and it grew from there.” About 300 total associates participated in the collection, as well as about 200 people representing 50 customers. “When you get more than 500 people who in some way heard the message and decided to participate, that’s the number that makes a difference,” Mike explains. “It’s not about the number of Hot Wheels. It’s like the old Danny

Thomas quote, ‘I’d rather have $1 from a million people than $1 million from one person.’ Why? Because you get more people involved. The more people you have involved, the more the message grows, and even more people get involved.” The momentum of the Hot Wheels project has spurred Region 2’s idea for 2024 – collecting Barbie dolls for St. Jude. “That’s our new mission,” Mike says. “We’re going to see how many Barbies we can collect, and more importantly, how many people we can get involved.” Thank you to our Region 2 teams for your Team Up efforts, as well as associates throughout our network who made a difference in 2023! Driver-Trainers, Driver Development Centers Play Vital Role DEVELOPING FOR THE FUTURE

career? Let your leader know about your goals, and check out our available opportunities at InsideAveritt.com/Opportunities. IN POSITION TO SUCCEED Our Driver Development Centers are another way we develop our associates. There are currently three of these facilities – Cookeville, Decatur and Lexington – and since the start of 2022, they have produced 375 graduates. Each center has instructors who have a wealth of Averitt experience – 42- year associate BRUCE WHITTAKER and 39-year associate GARY CRAIGHEAD in Cookeville; 37-year veteran DANNY WOODALL in Decatur; and DALE SANDERS in Lexington, who drove for 38 years and has spent close to 20 with Averitt. The development centers are used for a variety of purposes. Among them are preparing newer drivers for the road; acclimating drivers with experience at other companies; or helping current drivers fine-tune their skills as needed. “We have drivers who may have worked for a carrier that only pulled bulk, which we don’t do. With that, you never really backed,” Jason explains. “Or maybe they drove for a beverage company and hauled around a 30-foot pup all day. All those require a Class A, but all three are vastly different roles. We also have teammates who have a lot of experience at one of our competitors. The equipment may be similar, but our processes are vastly different. So our Driver Development Center trainers work with them to get them acclimated to Averitt.” Jason adds that the Driver Development Centers are a valuable resource for associates who may be coming off a leave for injury or illness. “We want to make sure they have the opportunity to ease back into it,” he explains. “We’ve been doing that for the past few years, and it’s been very successful.” With both driver-trainers and our Driver Development Centers, the goal is the same. “We want to put our drivers in the best position they can be,” Jason says. Thank you to our driver-trainers and Driver Development Center instructors for developing our driving force and putting us in position for a bright future. That’s the Averitt Way at work! T m DALE SANDERS
Our driver-trainers and Driver Development Centers play a vital role in helping our driving force be the best it can be. And both groups have loads of experience to pass along to our associates. MUCH MORE THAN DRIVING We currently have more than 330 driver-trainers throughout our network. According to JASON BOLTON of our safety leadership, every service center or Dedicated facility has at least one, and larger facilities may have more. When we talk about the Averitt Way, we’re referring to our unique culture. One of the most important ways we foster that culture is by recruiting the best teammates, developing them to their fullest potential and promoting from within.
Jason says that when the need arises for more driver-trainers, his team asks facilities for their recommendations and the process begins. “The people who want to be driver-trainers are those who have a passion for developing the next generation of drivers,” explains Jason, a 34-year team member who
JASON BOLTON
himself was a driver-trainer in Louisville for several years. “They’re ’ the best of the best of the best,’ and they’re leading by example and doing the right things. What we try to do is identify that and fine-tune it a bit. You’ve got to have the desire to do it. Not every good driver can teach those skills to others.” Once potential driver-trainers are identified, they go
through a thorough vetting and training process to ensure they’re ready for their new role. Jason adds that being a driver-trainer is much more than teaching people how to drive. “For example, in LTL, you’re showing how to sign bills of lading, how to use our tablets, working with customers, how to run your route, etc.,” Jason says. “We want to make

sure our driver-trainers are solid and understand all those things.” Are you interested in becoming a driver-trainer or growing in your Averitt

CUSTOMER SURVEY SAYS ... 1,400-Plus Shippers Share Their Thoughts On 2024 Expectations
Shippers’ thoughts boiled down to four major themes: a better outlook for 2024, the continued rise of e-commerce, growth of nearshoring to North America, and a focus on sustainability. A PROMISING OUTLOOK Following a year that saw several major industry players close their doors (Yellow, Convoy and others), more than 67% of shippers anticipate moving more freight in 2024 than they did in 2023. This marked a 4% gain over last year’s survey, and it’s a sign that customers will be relying on our team even more to deliver award-winning service in 2024. CYBER SHOPPING As e-commerce sales continue to grow – revenue in the U.S. could surpass $1 trillion this In what has become a yearly tradition, we recently surveyed more than 1,400 shippers about their expectations for the transportation industry in 2024. The result was our ninth annual State of the North American Supply Chain Survey.
year – businesses are focusing more on final mile services. These tend to include residential deliveries for large and oversized products that cannot be moved by traditional parcel services (e.g. furniture, office equipment, medical devices). We’re proud to offer Final Mile services, working with strategic partners to open the door to more opportunities with customers that otherwise might not be available. CROSS-BORDER SOLUTIONS Fueled by the passage of the United States- Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement and international concerns in recent years, many businesses have moved their supply chain operations back to North America. Mexico is a key player for these moves, making cross-border solutions an increasingly important part of shippers’ strategy. And because
of our infrastructure on the border, we’re well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS More businesses are focusing their efforts on reducing their impact on the environment. In fact, a whopping 83% of those surveyed said sustainability is of high or medium importance. Just 17% said it was of low importance. One way we’re connecting with customers is by sharing in their goals for sustainability – you can see our team’s efforts at Averitt.com/Green. As we move into 2024, we’re working with our customers to meet their needs and show The Power of One so we can create more bills throughout our network. Smacking Down the Rewards
Associate travels to WWE Smackdown Event thanks to his Red Thinkin' Rewards! Norfolk driver MICHAEL EMANUELE had his eyes set on one of his favorite events. And with the help of Red Thinkin’ Rewards, he was able to attend a wrestling event while on vacation in Pennsylvania. Our Red Thinkin’ Rewards program was something that piqued Michael’s interest when he learned about it during orientation. “I thought it was a cool way of saving toward a small appliance, so I was shocked when looking at what I could do with my points,” Michael recalls. Once he was aware of how easy it was to obtain points through safe driving and meeting operational KPIs, he knew he could build up his points. “From being a safe driver, you can really earn them and save up for a bigger reward,” he says.
Norfolk driving associate MICHAEL EMANUELE recently cashed in his Red Thinkin’ Rewards points to attend a WWE Smackdown event.
Michael took time off to visit his parents’ hometown of Hershey, PA. While there, he cashed in his points for tickets to a WWE event, allowing him and his wife to make memories with the points earned from the Red Thinkin’ Rewards program. “I encourage every Averitt associate to look into the program and check how many points you have,” Michael says. “I had no clue how many I had saved up until looking into it.” To learn more about Red Thinkin’ Rewards – including a catalog of available items as well as more information about how you can earn points for the actions you take each day – visit InsideAveritt.com/Rewards.
