THE K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S

Now the time for this “salvation,” when Messiah will deal in strict justice with the nations of the earth, had not come at the first appearance of our Lord. It will come when He returns from heaven. Therefore, Matthew is careful to quote only that part of the prophecy which was certain to be fulfilled at the first coming of opr Lord. There are no use less words in divine prophecy. Golden Text Illustration , M a t t h e w 21 :5 A young man who previously had shown slight interest in spiritual mat ters was persuaded by his godly mother to visit an art gallery to view the paint ing, “The Man of Galilee.” After view ing the picture from every angle, he stepped up to it and reverently said, “O Man of Galilee, if I can in any way help You to do Your work in the world, You can count on me.”—Selected. Why the Children Sang M a t t h e w 21:1-16 MEMORY VERSE: “With my song will I praise him” (Psa. 28:7). APPROACH: The Lord Jesus knew that the time was soon coming when He should die. He knew that His dis ciples were still hoping that He would free the Jews and would set up a king dom here on earth and be their King. God. So now He must go up to Jerusalem to die for the sins of others, just as He had known He would. But He was in deed a King, and He was going to ride up to Jerusalem in a way befitting a king. LESSON STORY: Fire hundred years before, a prophet had told how Jesus should ride up to Jerusalem as a king. And every prophecy which had been written about Jesus, He fulfilled. So when it was written by Zechariah, “Thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvatiop; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass” (9:9), that is exactly how Jesus did ride up to the gate of the city. And the people crowded about to greet Him at His coming. They threw down their garments in the street that He might ride over them. Others cut down branches and threw them down before Him. They followed Him and cried, “Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” They proclaimed Him as King, but Jesus knew th rt in their hearts they djd not think of Him as sucn. Ih a very Jesus could, have done this if the Jews had believed that He was their Mes siah, the One prom ised to them many, many years before. But they would not believe that He was their Messiah, their King, the Son of

short time these same people would cry, “Crucify him.” But Jesus was the King, whether the people believed it or not, and even though He was crucified, He was still a King to all of those who should believe. And it is the same to day. To all of those who will take Him into their hearts, He is truly King.

A F o r g o t t e n F r ie n d OBJECTS: A little celluloid donkey or one cut from cardboard, covered with brown paper, and a red cross cut from cardboard. LESSON: The little donkey that car ried Christ into Jerusalem was more like boys and girls than we at first realize. You know that in Old Testament times the people were looking forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus as their Sacri fice. In order to show that the people ex pected Him, animals from their flocks and herds were to be killed and offered on the altar of sacrifice. Certain ani mals were called unclean and could not be eaten. These animals could not be offered at the altar of sacrifice, either. Donkeys were among these animals that were called unclean. In Exodus 13:13 we are told that the first-born donkey must be redeemed with a lamb, or the donkey’s neck must be broken. Just as the lamb had to take the place of -the donkey, so Someone had to die in the place of people whose lives are not clean. Every one needs Christ, the Lamb of God, who died for sin. In another way the donkey was like boys and girls. He was tied where two roads met. The devil seeks to tie people at the crossroads, where the broad way leads to destruction, and the narrow way leads to life. The donkey was loosed by the servants of God and the words of Christ. This, is the way boys and girls are loosed from habits and sins which hold them. Then, too, the donkey was used by Christ. He carried the Saviour into, the city. The Lord Jesus can use boys and girls, when they have been freed from sin and bad habits. I will place this red cross on the donkey’s back and let it remind us of Christ. (A paper pocket on the donkey’s side will hold the cross in a vertical position.) The donkey could not talk, but it could lift Christ so others could see Him. God wants us to imitate this little don key that helped to make Christ known as He entered the city of Jerusalem.
