marsh. . . . You ask how it can breathe and live in the water? Oh, it has an apparatus by which it is able to gather around itself a bubble of air a few times larger than its body. It goes to the surface and fills it with air and goes down, and this little air bubble forms an atmosphere for it, and there it builds its nest and rears its youngs So the spider is as safe in its little home with the dark water all around it, as if it lived above in the clear air of heaven. So we cam get into our element and stay there with Him, and although there is sin around us, and hell beneath us, and men are struggling and tempted and sinning, we shall be as safe as the saints above, in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus. —A. B. Simpson. n . B asis of G rowth In our days one can hear much talk about growth in the Christian life. Well and good, if there is anything in the life that can grow. “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Gal. 6:7). But if I planted my watch, dare I hope for a crop of watches ? Why not ? The watch is the product of the trained mind and skillful hand of man, but there is no germ of life in it that could germinate and bring forth fruit. Christ alone by His indwelling can bring forth fruit in our life that is well-pleasing to God.—D. L. Moody. Questions for Discussion 1. Is it possible to live victoriously? (Rom. 6:14; 8:1-4; Gal. 5:25). 2. What are the greatest hindrances to living the new life in Christ ? 3. What is the matter if young peo ple' as well as older Christians do not radiate Christ? (Psa. 34:5—in R. V. “lightened” is rendered “radiant”). S criptures T hat H elp Cleansing (1 John 1:7,9; 2 Cor. 7:1). Yielding (Rom. 6:13, 16, 19; Eph. 5:18; 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; 2 Cor. 5:14, 15; Rom. 12:1,2). Believing (Josh. 1:1-3, 10, 11; Eph. 1:3; 2:8; Matt. 9:28-30; Z Cor. 5:7). JANUARY 21, 1940 STARTLING NEW FULFILLMENT OF AGES-OLD PROPHECY 2 P e t e r 1:19-21 Meditation on the Lesson The study of Biblical prophecy is one of the most fascinating as well as satis fying of all studies. The modem atti tude toward the Bible largely discount's, disbelieves, or rejects predictive proph ecy. But the denial or rejection does not change the facts. If we accept Christ as our Redeemer and Saviour, we must accept and be lieve in predictive prophecy, for the Lord Jesus gave His divine attestation to Old Testament prophecies over and over again (cf. Mk. 12:36; 13:14; Lk. 4:18, 19). Only God can know the end from the beginning (Isa. 46:9, 10; cf. the challenge of Isaiah 41:21-23).

2. If God. plainly states we need a new nature, how may that truth be come real to us? (1 John 5:10; Psa. 139:23, 24; Rom. 10:17; 1 Pet. 1:23). 3. How is our new nature identified with the Lord Jesus Christ? (2 Cor. 5:17; 1 John 5:10-12). ■ t JANUARY 14, 1940 CAN 1940 YOUNG PEOPLE LIVE A NEW LIFE? ‘2 ; C orinthians 5:17; P hilippians “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he, i s . a. new creature [R. V. margin, “there is a new creation”] : old things are passed away; behold, all things are hecome ,new” (2 Cor. 5:17). What bet t e r '“New Year” verse can we choose than this one ? God does not take our old nature, our old self, and reform it or, clean it up. No, praise to His holy name, lie takes away our stony hearts and gives us new ones, hearts “of flesh” (Ezek. 36:26). He makes us new creatures “in Christ”—in living union with Him. Christ is to be pre-eminent in this union.. The apostle puts it thus: “To me to live is Christ” (Phil. 1:21). What a, triumphant saying! Many would have to say, “To me to live is fame,” or “pleasure,” or “money,” “ease,” but for the one who has become a “new creature in Christ Jesus,” it is possible to say, “To me to live is Christ,” for “Christ liveth in me.” The mystery of this union with Christ puzzles many. It is an experience which can be lived and even illustrated, but never fully explained. The old colored inan had the right answer for the man Who said sarcastically, “You said Christ lived in you, and now you say you are in' win;. How can that possibly bè?” The old Negro said thoughtfully: “See this poker? I’ll put it in the fire until it turns red, Now the fire’s in the poker, and the poker’s in the fire.” We are hid with Christ in God, and His imparted life flows out from us. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in hie: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself 'for me” (Gal. 2:20). Can 1940 young people live a new life? Yés, if they yield their lives to 'their Lord. “Yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God” (Rom. 6:13). Yield for His filling. Believe that He does it. Obey, that His full control may continue. Helps for the Leader I.
