It is time that Christian Americans should recognize that evolutionism is propaganda, for Bolshevism, Fascism, Naziism, and Communism represent evo lution carried into effect, applied to the life of a nation.

cult to reconcile Darwinism with the findings of Mendel, but scientists the world over have accepted Mendel’s law as the foundation for studies in genetics. A group of Soviet educators have lined up behind Professor Lysenko in demanding that “Mendelianism and all its equivalents should be taken bodily out of the curricula of the higher insti tutions of learning, and from the hand books on seed culture. The theory of Marxian ‘dialectical materialism’ is in compatible with Mendelianism.” So far as Soviët Russia is concerned, this proved law of science will just be “re-

The In ternational S tandard Bible Encyclopaedia

This scholarly five-volume work, re vised and enlarged by Melvin Grove Kyle in 1930, is now offered in a new 1940 edition. Embracing an adequate treatment of every word in the- Bible and Apocrypha having Scriptural sig nificance, as well as many related sub jects in the realm of archaeology, criti cism, theology, doctrine, and history, the work was originally prepared under the able direction of an editorial board of which James Orr was the general

editor, with John L. Nuelsen and Edgar Y. Mullins as assistant editors, and Morris O. Evans as managing editor. The aid of over two hundred eminent scholars was sought for their contribu tions to this storehouse of information. The International Bible Encyclopaedia gives voice to the best scholarship of the day in its advocacy of a reverent criti cism of the Bible. The work was six years in preparation, and all five vol umes were issued at one time; thus preserving balance and uniformity of treatment. Throughout, there is evi dence of reverence, prayerfulness, and united painstaking effort which must have characterized those who contrib uted to its completion. Withal, there is a simplicity of style that is actually a lure to the reader. With a motto, “Made to serve,” this encyclopaedia has in view the average reader, but at the same time it satisfies the demands of persons of broad educa tion. Its fairness of treatment of con troverted points has won wide com mendation. Complete analytical outlines preface the articles wherever possible. Articles are carefully divided by a com plete and handy system of headings and subheadings. The system of indexes— seven in all—is a crowning achievement, insuring quick location of the material desired. There are nearly 25,000 refer ences. The books are illustrated with 700 halftones, and with numerous maps. Whoever has studied this work will not require the opinion of writers to convince him of its genuine excellence. But the views of two authorities—one British and one American—are added here, as being the expression of count less other persons. Writes G. Campbell Morgan; “I consider the work invalu able to young preachers, who may con sult it without any fear as to its in tegrity and scholarship, and with cer tainty of its very real helpfulness.” De clares Wilbur M. Smith; “Its articles are conservative, dependable, under standable by any normally intelligent person, and seem in many cases to breathe a devotional spirit so disap pointingly absent in most works of this kind.” Five volumes, 3,159 pages, Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Library Buckram, $39.50, Persian Morocco, $48.50.
