The New York Times email newsletter “TheMorning” gave the NewsMatch drive a boost in its Tuesday, December 1, edition. “A cornerstone of democracy, collapsing” was the headline on Giving Tuesday, promoted as an opportunity for people to give to nonprofits after shopping in person on Black Friday and online on Cyber Monday. “If you are worried about the state of local news,” wrote newsletter editor David Leonhardt, “you can donate through NewsMatch.” Since 2016, the NewsMatch campaign has helped raise over $100 million for nonprofit journalism, helping jumpstart small, emerging newsrooms, supporting newsrooms that serve or are led by underrepresented communities, and strengthening mission-based organizations. Newsrooms that receive matching funds are required to be active members of the INN, a membership organization that supports and advances independent, nonprofit news organizations that do original, fact-based reporting. The current winter edition of the Applegater includes articles about the recent uncovering of previously unknown history and subsequent renaming of Ben Johnson Mountain in the Applegate, the impact of COVID-19 on the watershed’s arts and enterprise communities, how to
celebrate safely in a time of social distancing, how local schools are coping with the pandemic, and how Applegate nonprofits banded together to raise more than $7,000 for those suffering losses in the Almeda Fire. NewsMatch is supported by a number of donors, including the Democracy Fund, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Facebook Journalism Project, the Independence Public Media Foundation, and the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation.
